Best role model

The argument who is best will go on forever.  Many trainers suggest picking a famous player and modeling yourself after him (or her).  Which player would be the best role model?

TheGrobe

It depends entirely on your preferred style of play.

odessian

how do you "model" a player? Even a chess style is a very subjective thing

malibumike

I read that Kasparov modeled his game after Alekhine.  Fischer choose Capablanca.  Of course the choice depends on your style.  Given that, who would you choose?

Tricklev

If I had to make a choice, I'd model my games after Paul Morphy or Adolf Andersson, and I'd model my opponents games after N.N.

If I'm not allowed to model my opponents games, then I haven't got a proper answer.

ravster

i would choose fischer ;) was just joking but i personally like Kasparov and turning into a player like him would be great.

Kasparov, Capablanca

malibumike

Kasparov and Capablanca are both in the top ten of all time, but their styles are on opposite ends.  Why this choice?

odessian

I like stability of Capablanca and lack of weaknesses in Kasparov's games.

I must confess that I'm reluctant to enter a Tal-like position.  I prefer control and Petrosian, Karpov and Ulf Andersson are my choices.

I think players like Anand, Ivanchuk are the best role models. They always kept chess above anything else.

@malibumike: Choose a player who employs the same opening repertoire as yourself.  For example, if you play Sveshnikov and Grunfeld, then idolize Peter Leko or Boris Gelfand.  By the way, Ivanchuk plays everything.

Recently I found a player who likes very solid openings (Colle-like systems for white & Caro-Kann-Slav systems for Black) and very good endgame skill.  Keith Arkell from England.

ghostofmaroczy

I hope Keith Arkell leads you to good places, malibumike.

However, I don't find Keith Arkell playing the Slav as Black.  He plays offbeat stuff and the Nimzo-Indian.

Ghostofmaroczy--would you care for an on-line game?
