Best way to make 3D chessboard for art?

Blender (or a paid modeling program) is something that can be used if you want it to be 3d and able to be rotated. Photoshop if for a stock image.

I have googled like mad. Not sure that I have found that much. At least not much that I consider to be a quality tutorial - that is a 3D chessboard tutorial that is lifelike as in refections and shadows and patterns rather than some cartoonish, naff load of trash.
That's a huge surprise to me. I mean, lots of people must have wanted to do this.
