Strategic even in choosing your wisely named username. I'm not much of a chess player, admittedly, but you make a great deal of sense. I will try to use this Strategy : )))
Beware! Pawns can kill!

Go, my beautiful army of little soldiers! This is for everyone who considers the Pawn as a 'puny, little, piece of junk'. Yup, it can hit hard on you!
Pawns are what really make up the whole of your game. You need stuff to look after specific parts of the board when your other pieces are not even close. If you are disrespecting pawns, or giving away pawns as if they were no loss to you, you are obviously making a big mistake. Your pawn army might wreck your opponent's piece set-up (or even your opponent's Brain), if you use them wisely. A chain of pawns will prove to be a big boon to you, trapping your opponent's pieces, and also making them give away their valuable pieces in exchange for your pawns.
You cannot image openings without pawns, can you? No pawns, means Chess is boring without much strategies. It will seem that all the Sicilian Defense, the Ruy Lopez blah.. blah.. were all sucked up by a Black Hole of some sort. Plus, it is really fun playing with pawns, gaining centre control, threatening other pieces and giving Discovered Checks or Discovered Attacks with pawns.
Now, if you're still not satisfied, then how on earth are you going to get backup if you lose your 'Great', 'Strong', 'Immortal' Queens and Rooks (and sometimes Knights and Bishops too)? You kick away all your pawns, you will have no chance of promotions in the endgame. And by a very obvious guess, I would say that you will obviously resign. So obvious! Promotions play a very important part in the game, and there's no denying. I will fire an army of pawns to the one who does deny this unquestionable fact.
Pawns can also double-attack, if they've got support behind them. Like when one pawn attacks a Bishop and a Knight, or a Queen and King, while having a helper behind it, and no possibility of check is there against you by one of the attacked pieces. This will force your opponent to lose his/her piece for one of your pawns. (I wouldn't say you should cry for your pawns in this situation. )
Now for some little, brief advice for using pawns. Get them ahead as much as possible when you are capable of doing so without incurring a loss. Gain centre control at the start of a game, at the same time, open up your pieces. Prepare your pawn in such a way that moving it will give Discovered Checks/Attacks, and you can get it even further. Don't hesitate to give away a pawn for a greater piece, unless it lands you in real trouble as an immediate result. BE IN THE LOOKOUT FOR PIECE-SACS, DON'T FALL FOR THEM!
