Blindfold chess for improvement?

I've been playing a lot against the computer bots with the "blindfold" piece set, and winning most games up to around 60% of my rating, only losing to fatal blunders once I forget where the pieces are. Each game feels harder and takes much longer than an equivalent regular game. Is this something that will improve my normal chess playing over time, or a pointless memory exercise?
I tried blindfold game in real life against a fellow chess player in the past. I lost most of my games in under 20 moves. Very few exceeded 20 moves, and in the longest one I had, I lost a rook because I visualised the position wrongly. I ended up playing a "rook takes pawn" when the pawn was protected by an opposing rook.
