Board for bud rosewood pieces?

Hello everyone,

i have a beautiful 4.5" chess set in bud rosewood and need to buy a board for it. I would like to get suggestions on the dark squares wood type.

do I need to look only on rosewood boards for my set to match and look good as combination? Or can I get a nice Sheesham wood board that would run me twice less expensive? Will bid rosewood look good on Sheesham wood or will it look stupid?

Please share your thoughts an thank you in advance!

You can see that with different illumination it appears very differently. The picture with pawns was taken with flash

jinnymer,

Looks like the Luxor set from House of Chess. I've owned their Encore set in bud rosewood for a couple of years now. One thing to remember, as you can see from the pictures below, the bud rosewood will darken over time. Something you'll want to consider when selecting a chess board. If you go with the dark rosewood board because you like the contrast with the bud rosewood, you may be disappointed as the chess pieces darken and you start to lose that contrast.

For reference, here's my HoC Encore set on a custom padauk and northern ash chess board from Bill's Woodpile on Etsy.

If you go with one of the HoC boards, I would recommend the golden rosewood because it will maintain a nice contrast even as the bud rosewood pieces darken.

Thank you for advice. I appreciate it. I was also considered Padauk board for better contrast.
