Bobby Fischer in Pawn Sacrifice

In Pawn Sacrifice, it is shown that in a match, Bobby Fischer arrives a little late, then adjust all his pieces and gives his move at the 59th second...he would have lost in case he would have failed to give a move before the 1 minute mark.

I have read quite a bit about Bobby Fischer but I had never heard of this. So is it a true fact or has it been shown to enthrall the people watching the movie?

In case this is a true fact, any citations would be of much help to me.

Thanks.

I haven't seen the movie yet but it is dramatic effect. FIDE has tried implementing draconian rules more recently where being late to the game would incur a forfeit. I believe they have become a little more reasonable and as far as I know, nothing like that was in effect at the time.

edit: I meant the one minute thing. I believe if a player was an hour late they would forfeit the game. So, if that was what was being shown, then something similar may have happened ... he did show up late to games and I believe his first game of the championship he almost did lose by forfeit.

I heard this was true, it off course helps greatly psychological but losing time on purpose normally isn't done lol.

There was a previous thread about this but I can't find it now.  If I recall correctly, Fisher did once (or more) show up late for a match and then dither a bit before moving, but it wasn't the same match (or even the same tournament?) as shown in the film.

Never mind the game, I can't even find a chess player from the 20th century named Ivanovich (can't make out the first name) that played for the USSR, or any other country. ...

However, a dispute over the scheduling of some of his games led to Fischer's withdrawing, although he was the clear leader at the time. ... When this game was scheduled to play, neither Reshevsky nor the tournament organizers expected Fischer to appear. However, working behind the scenes, the U. S. Chess Federation Executive Director Ed Edmundson had persuaded Bobby to return to the tournament while Edmundson attempted to make things right. Fischer agreed, and with only a few minutes left before the expiration of one hour on his clock - which would have meant Fischer would have lost by forfeit - Bobby suddenly appeared and banged out his e-pawn to e4. A stunned Sammy never quite got over the surprise and Bobby defeated him without much difficulty. ..." - Karsten Müller (2009)

There is some similarity with the movie incident, but some details are different. If I remember correctly, the movie purported to be depicting the first Fischer game of the 1966 Piatigorsky tournament.

I finally saw the movie last month. It was a waste of time. As a chess player, it had so many inaccuracies it was painful to watch, and as a fan of movies, it had no compelling characters or tension. This wasn't all-time bad, just forgettably bad.

I gave the movie 2-stars.

Regarding arriving late: at the time, if you showed up an hour late, you forfeit. That rule has since been changed, and players are now expected to arrive on time.

Fischer routinely arrived late, sometimes very late. I don't know that he ever arrived 59 minutes late though.

i read in some book by Irving Chernev that, supposedly:

David Bronstein once sat down to play a very serious tournament or match game, 2 1/2 hours each , etc. standard time control. and that he spent

1 hour 50 min on move 6

then went on to dash his opponent to bits the rest of the game :

having seen so much, so deepy, he sat there using his opponents' time against him  .....

He starts off with all caps. Then goes to almost normal typing, but the first letter of each word is capitalized. Then he goes back to all caps. lol
