I'm sorry, but it's true.

  1. # of Female GMs < # of Male GMs.

It proves everything. There are more men who are good at chess than women.

Tricklev

That doesn't mean that men are better than women, there are also alot less women who plays chess than men, alot less. If we use statistics like you, we can prove alot of things, alot.

engopentilldeath

but how many men play chess compared to woman? You have no stats or proof to back up your sexist theory other then number of gms?

ThePaladin

Is it sexist to say men are better than women at some things and women are better than men at some things?  I am not saying it IS so.  I am just asking.  I think it is an interesting question.

Tricklev

Women are better than Irish people at chess.

I'm sorry, but it's true.

women are better mothers than men

number of female mothers > number of male mothers.

yes if you say men are better then woman in something where they both have the same ability to be equal. especially if you have some moronic 14 year old saying it who has no statistics or proof.

wingtzun

it is not sexist.... it is fact.

ThePaladin

Yes, adhd, I agree.  But your arguement is circular.  It is sexist to say one gender is better at another when they both have the same capacity.  But if they don't have the same capacity?  It seems to me the original poster is saying they don't have the same capacity.  Now I think they do, but I don't see how it is automatically sexist to say they don't.  I have been beaten by female players who are way better than me.  I am not arguing females are inferior players.  But can't he be simply wrong without being sexist?

marvellosity

I'm pretty sure men are better than women at chess, but not because of the number of male/female GMs, like Paladin said that's somewhat circular.

Generally speaking man's range of intelligence/ability has a wider range than woman's. i.e. There are more likely to be brilliant men than women, but there are also going to be more completely dumbass men than women.

That would also mean that men are worse at chess than females, wouldn't it?

ThePaladin

Tricklev, yes it would.  The big question in my mind is, why does it matter?

MapleDanish

Read an article once by some looney team of psychologists (all men? :P) that stated that women have slightly different 'brain wiring' ... They tend to have a harder time calculating and evaluating several things simultaneously (perhaps tactical motifs in chess application?).  On the other hand men find it harder to focus on individual things...

Kinda makes sense to me, interesting theory.  It'll explain why men are supposedly 'better chess players' and yet can't have a conversation while they're watching the yankees :P.

How does this statistic prove boys are better at chess than girls? All this proves is that there are more male GM's than female GM's, which, given that there are more male players than femaleis not suprising (at least not from a purely statistical point of view).

Perhaps you could find some statistics from FIDE showing average ratings of male & female chess players, or average ratings of male & female GM's. These might be more insightful, although I really can't understand why anyone would care about who is better...

Lol. In a weird way, yes. But the only way you can measure ability of this type is to look at the top end, because of course below this anyone can beat anyone.

Not true -- it proves that he's a troll.

Men and women are different... as they say in France "Viva la Difference!"
