Breaking The Abominal Slump

Lately I have been experiencing a slump and it has affect my play as shown by my lower rating.

I need to break out of this slump fast because I have been planning to play in a < 1700 rated tournament in a about 10 days.  There will be three 75|30 games each day for two days.

This would be the first real tournament I have played in.  I think if I can just play my usual I have a real chance of taking first place.

I have had slumps before but it takes me about two weeks to get out of them.  I am just hoping you might have some advice to give me regarding getting back to your usual game.  I have already tried playing lots of games and watch videos but that does not seem to work.

Advice appreciated.

Abominable slump?

Lower rating in what? Most of your ratings haven't moved. Your blitz rating fell a bit. Over the long term, the slump is not even visible. I wouldn't worry about it.

I would give up blitz until after the tournament and work on practicing slow chess.  Two days of 9 hours or more of chess takes a lot of endurance.

OTB chess is a completly different game vs online chess. I would not worry about it.

Just remember everone has slumps. My OTB rating once dropped 50 points over the course of a month (Two tournaments). It then jumped over 150 points the following two months bringing me to my then peak of 1809. Everyone has slumps, the important part is just to enjoy the game, study if you wish to improve, and play inspired chess games.Smile

How so? I play long online chess and my OTB vision is good.

You stated it will be your first tournament, OTB? if it is, its one thing to sit at home playing online in the comfort of your home, but if your in a hotel setting  its a bit more stressful in unfamiliar surroundings.

@Talsknight Good point! However I don't fear the setting. In fact I think I might even play better there. Have you been affected by it before if ever experienced?

I have before if its been on a day I had to work such as on a friday evening game. Also if you lose a game early and have to sit around untill the next round it can be very boring to wait unless you have a room at the hotel or near the tournament site. But all this will vary according to your personallity.
