bullet chess is bad. You are hardly given any time to think, you are just playing cookie clicker with extra steps. Why play chess at that point? Just go google "kung fu chess" and play that instead, it's much more fun, because it's just better bullet. In bullet you're still confined to the turn based system of the game, which beats the inherent intention of bullet chess, which is to outwit your opponent through quick movements. Yet you are still limited to how fast the opponent moves, so you get the worst of both worlds. the best part about bullet is that if you need to go pipi in your pampers you can finish the game faster, but in a slower game you can just go without needing to finish. There is no reason to play bullet, it is too fast and at the same time, too slow. Instead, if you want a game with actual thinking involved, you should play 3 minute blitz.

The best players play 1|0 bullet because they are paranoid about engine assistance.
3|0 is too fast too: flagging still plays an important role. The official blitz time control for World Championship etc. is 3|2. Classical World Championship blitz tiebreakers are 5|3.

'pipi in pampers' mentioned in 2023. This post is certified baroque.

Bullet makes you feel like a chess ninja

Speed chess is bad for you when you don't have time to think and it conditions you to move before calculating? Who knew? grin.png

Yet you also play it. This is just blasphemy nothing else.

I think bullet chess is meant to be fun to people who have basically mastered chess to some degree already. I can't imagine it brings any value to someone who isn't already incredibly skilled but that is probably true for blitz as well, at least at the faster time controls.

I'm surprised to see a Mod start a thread...interesting. and Bullet chess is NOT bad! It's good quick practice for various openings/defenses. It also has real-world applications, wherein there are times when one must "think quick on your feet".

Bullet chess is addictive because the games are so quick. "I'll just get my ELO up to x00", you say, then lose 3 games in a row, then "I can't quit while I'm down ELO", and you win 1 and lose 2 more. Then in a flash it's 1 am and, exhausted and broken, you crawl into bed, dreading awaking to the new ELO reality.
If I'm working during the day and I want a quick chess fix, there's many options, including puzzles, lessons, etc. But a quick bullet game is like candy -- it has no value, makes me feel guilty afterwards, but it feeds an addiction.
I play 2+1 for bullet ELO, which is slow by bullet standards ("fake bullet"), but given my puzzle-rush best of 21, to my brain it's still way too fast for much calculation. Top players do more analysis in hyperbullet. I'm much better off investing my chess time in fewer rapid games.

I find bullet chess helps me analyze the board faster so that I rarely have time trouble in longer formats.

Personally, I enjoy all time controls. Just don't play Bullet if it's not your thing. But I wouldn't make a blanket statement that Bullet chess is not fun. It may not be fun to you, but that doesn't mean that other people can't enjoy it. It's not morally wrong to play, so I don't see the harm in it. Besides, as @spectros1 touched on, Bullet chess can really help you to instantly analyze the board and find good moves. That can help you if you ever get into time trouble, not just in a Bullet game, but also when your time gets low even in Rapid.
