Asian-Themed Chess Set

I came across this chess set in a thrift shop of all places.

Definitely an Asian-themed chess set.

The light squares of the board seem to be made from pieces of shell.  In its current condition, it would be safe to say that the board has seen better days. The board is hinged and turns into a box to store the pieces.

The pieces are made from wood, but what type, I cannot say with any certainty. They are roughly crafted and not weighted.  The bottom of the pieces are covered in a thin, red felt.

In the image with the King and "Queen", I have to say, the queen does not look feminine at all, unless those lines are supposed to represent a fan.  It makes me wonder if this "queen" might be the king's advisor. It appears the queen is sporting a pointed helmet, lol.

That is definitely not a Staunton looking knight. I think the bishop's mitre is pretty neat.

Here are the rook and pawn.  I once had a chess set I got in South Korea with rooks similar to this one.

The set is interesting, to say the least and it only cost about $2.00.

That's a nice-looking set. I really like the bishop design as well.

I like it! I dig the bishops as well.

I'm also pretty sure I know the style of Korean set you're talking about; my dad was there in the early 80s, and one of the things he brought home was a very large chess set made of black (with white in it) and white (with blue in it) stone.

Also relatedly, in a small thrift shop in rural Virginia is where I found a Makruk (thai chess) set. Naturally, I bought it. It was a cheap plastic set, blue and pink, but I had been looking for one for a long time unsuccessfully, since Makruk seems virtually unknown outside Thailand.

In Indonesia, the Queen is called the Menteri, which basically means the Minister. i guess that explains the queen's appearance.
