If your king has been in check on a previous move, but didn't move to avoid it, you can still castle on a later move.

If your king is currently in check, or any of the squares in his path are under attack, he may not castle:

Incidentally, having a1 or b1 under attack is NOT an impediment to castling -- only the king's squares matter.  Famously, Victor Korchnoi asked an arbiter about that rule during one of his world championship matches with Karpov!

wht does it have 2 do with d1...

To castle queenside, the rule is that the king would have to pass through d1 to reach c1, his final destination. In Spiffe's diagram, d1 is attacked by the rook. This means that castling queenside is not possible as the king would have to pass through an attacked square.

oh.. didnt kno tht...thx.

but y in the rules thy say tht king cant castle if he has been through a check?

castling has nothing to do with any checks in which the king may have previously been.

1. you can't castle if any pieces are between the king and the intended rook.

2. you can't castle if the king or the intended rook has ever moved.

3. you can't castle through check, into check, or out of check.

4. when you castle, you move the king first, not the rook.

it sounds like there is a symantics issue.  passing "through check" means that he has to move passed a square that is currently under attack (as has been covered above).

the king going "through check" does not mean that a king has previously survived the ordeal of being "through check".

does that help?

Why not go to the official source?

You can find the FIDE laws of chess at http://www.fide.com/component/handbook/?id=124&view=article

It's simple.  The king cannot castle onto or through (past) a square that is under attack.  The rook however can do this.

you can castle even if your king is in check ,anytime but not if it moves your king to a spot that will put it in check again

If your king lands on a checked square you just say "anti-check" three times. You can do this only once per game and if a unicorn is observing.

this rule is only in forced if the game lasts over 6 hours
