You have to make a private club with your whoever you want to play in the tournament, then make a club tournament. Does that help?

Yeah, it’s both, except I’m pretty sure you can make private daily tournaments if you want daily
I believe that you can only make daily tournaments if you upgrade.

If I want to create a private tournament for a future date, but I don’t have a club at the moment, can I create the tournament and then add people later on? Also can the tournament be locked or have entry passcode or something?

There's no way to create a passcode. For Live tournaments the only option outside of a club is to use Shareable events and only members with a link to the event can play in it.
