if dumb=low IQ  then No.  Sorry.

Dumb people dont even like to play chess.

This cannot be true. IQ is measured with questions that come from seven categories such as mathematical, verbal, spacial, pattern recognition, and some others. Many chess players who are children under the age of ten could get a relatively high ranking in chess. But there is no way they'd have had enough school to answer all the math questions or grammar. I believe it is possible they'd do well on spacial reasoning, classification, logic and patterns, but if they were to do poorly on math or verbal sections they could be technically considered "dumber" than the adults who may have taken the same test.

Additionally, to be good at chess someone has to have had studied or to have been coached extensively. While there may be natural talent to comprehend chess very well and win a lot of games, it is still largely acquired knowledge in a specific field, not a broad field. If all other areas are ignored and only chess is present in a student's life they'll end up being dumber than an average person, but will excell at chess.

I also don't think that a chess player is necessarily skillful in music or art. Artistic and musical talents are each their own type of intelligence. Social skills are an indicator of IQ as well because not everyone can interact well with people, or to have the ability to perceive what others want or mean in a conversation, verbally or through body language. We know that a lot of dedicated chess players aren't the best smooth talkers.

Finally, as someone has mentioned, there are idiot savants.

Well imperfect though they may be, the one thing IQ measurements are is age adjusted.

The_Ghostess_Lola

IDK, but I do know you can be a good person and still be dumb at chess....like me.

Only humans are capable of asking such questions ..... 'sigh'.

I am talking about adults. But it is an inconvenient fact that low iq is very easy to spot -- the subject in question is deficient in every possible human achievment (but not suffering from any mental illness or development disorder) - there is actually a direct correalation between low iq and violent crime.  -- media normally spin criminals as being intellegent but this only holds for those "high" up mafia bosses etc. - In any case no low iq individuals will be drawn to chess or any academic pursuit

Depends on what you call dumb, I've met people in my life who you wonder how they get out of thier house in the morning and are still good at chess. I also (when I lived in Saudi Arabia) used to play chess with a man who on a solar eclips prayed for the sun to return.

On this occation I believed he was ill informed (dumb) as the mechanics of the solar system are set and he believed I was dumb as God doesn't need to believe in mechanics.

No, Fischer was right about everything. It's Kasparov that proves you can be a dumb human.

a genius does not care what an idiot calls hate speech -- geniuses (and even relatively smart people) don't care for the terms  of the indoctrinated -  hate speech - hate crime -- lol.

Someone mentioned that Fischer was smart outside of chess. As far as I know there were no IQ tests he took. But there were multiple interviews with him before and after the Spassky match. I think in one interview I read he was already 20. I mean, if you read what he says in the interview there should clearly be no question that the man is lacking in a more than one type intelligence. His answers indicate he has no empathy, Is not very intelligent socially, and I get the picture he is ignorant about life in general due to his comments about women, gays, and Jews. I am surprised I haven't read about him bashing black people back then.

Before anyone begins typing angrily to reply to me, I have to say that I have immense respect and gratitude to Bobby Fischer for popularizing chess in the United States, and of coarse for beating the crooked Soviet chess machine. I was born there and I hate the historical arrogance of USSR, and modern arrogance of Russia (even in a recent documentary about soviet chess, a TV documetary from Russia's main channel stated that the only reason Fischer won is because of his "psychological games" and demands, and they even suggest that CIA had highly developed devices to direct waves at Spassky to make him lose. LOL)

Despite the respect for Bobby Fischer described above, one has to remain objective and acknowledge that he was most likely mebtally I'll and was getting worse and worse and worse over the years. He jumped from extreme to extreme. Mentioning he doesn't believe in God because he read Nietzsche (not a rational reason in my opinion), then joining an apocalyptic Christian cult that predicted Jesus would return in 1975 (not a rational and extreme choice as well).

It's likethere was never any middle ground for Fischer. As the journalist commented, Fischer behaved like a big spoiled child (that was in 196-something)

So I think Fischer definitely must have been an example of a chess genius who was dumb in many other areas of life.

The interview and other information I mentioned can be found at bobbyfischer.net

You'll only see a few people that can analyze situations so well. The human mind is predictable.

Can you be a dumb person and good at chess?

It depends on what you mean by "dumb."

If you mean truly mentally challenged, then no.

But I coached a very successful high school chess team and had this same discussion with other coaches and parents.

The answer was clearly: Yes, you can be good at chess even if you are academically poor. This was based on the ratings of the players from the various schools, where many of the best players in the county were clearly poor academic students.

If you are not "smart" you still may have good board perception, where you recognize and remember patterns and utilize rules of thumb like: "A knight on the 2nd rank is poorly placed, on the 3rd rank is ready for action, on the 4th rank is as good as a Bishop, on the 5th rank is better than a Bishop, on the 6th rank is usually devastating."

I've known poor students who didn't do well on IQ tests who became tremendous at foreign languages, art, music, acting and other areas requiring mental skills, so why not chess?

I think you must be inteligent if you want to be good at chees but you must also train

Blub878

Yes, a dumb person can play chess very good. I played chess against a dumb person before and I lost every time.
