Can you make ChatGPT play a fair game against you?

ChatGPT isn't capable of playing chess, unfortunately.

It's a language AI. It understands about chess, and it knows some basic ideas and principles (based on its understanding of language). But beyond that, it can't really play a game to any legitimate degree, nor can it think about moves.

It's like asking Stockfish to write a novel. Stockfish wouldn't know what the heck words are, nor how to use them ...

Maybe that ChatGPT is not that bad actually. Just found this: https://youtu.be/fpFBogy-ME0

Seems like it can play really well if prompted properly and can beat high-rated bots too

I just actually thought chatgpt how to play chess since it was doing illegal moves and blunders while we are playing chess

The structure of LLMs is insufficient to properly learn "logic". It is predicting the most probable word and spitting it out to you. AI is largely overhyped and dumb, and faces not just scaling problems but fundamental structural problems to become a true AGI. And in my opinion that's a great thing.

How could a model that is spitting out the most likely answer ever play a novel game of legal chess? The answer is it can't. You could probably get it to play legal moves if you played all book moves or famous historical games
