Can you mate with two knights?

dylana64
It's not IMPOSSIBLE to mate with two Knights, but you'll need some help from your opponent. Once your opponent is at the edge of the board, he'll need to make a HUGE and obvious blunder that involves going towards the corner. However, it's impossible to force him over there and deliver mate. That's the long answer to your short question. Basically, no, you can't force mate with only two Knights and a king (K+N+N v. K).

It's not impossible to mate with two Knights, even in a non-artificial position, however, certain conditions have to be met. Since I forgot what those conditions are I cannot help you any further than just telling you that it is possible, and perhaps, if you know a NM, or any master, they might be able to explain the details to you.

You cannot force mate with two knights. You can however mate with two knights if your opponent is helpful. You can force mate with 3 knights.

It is interesting to note that while 2 knights cannot force mate vs K, if the opponent is unlucky enough to have a pawn (thus K and 2 N vs K and P) then things become interesting as the option of stalemate is no longer available to him and the two knights can in many cases force mate.

Well I just got off the phone with a national master and he told me it is impossible to mate with just two knights.  There would have to be at least one other pawn on the board in order for the mating sequence to work.

I have a book that has the mating sequence for two knights, though I do not want to give it to you

Don't know but troll attempts that are not chess related are kind of pointless.

The diagram is illegal.White's last move was Nf7 checkmate. But before that, black's King must have moved to h8 from h7,(illegal) or from g7,(illegal) or from g8(illegal).Therefore the diagram is not valid.EDIT: I stand corrected,it is legal,Ng5+ was white's move and then helpmate.Apologies.

Just noodling around a bit...

Of course, it qualifies as a helpmate. Smile

Unless the two knights are opposing sexes then no, but they could adopt!

But that is with a king’s help and the opponent foolishly backed into the corner, otherwise it is impossible to checkmate with a king jumping around the center or sides.
