Can you win this position in 36 seconds?

In a blitz game I had 36 seconds left ( opposed to more than 2 minutes by my higher rated opponent ) with this position, white to move:

I felt that it had to be winning, but there was an obvious 3-fold repetition. I went for the repetition. After the game I looked at it with the engine and it says there is only one winning move ( but this move is crushing, +7.5, the second best is only +0.41 ).

Don't look at it with the engine. Give yourself 36 seconds and answer: would you have played on?

I haven't thought it through but I'd play er and hope for the best!

Oh, it's a lovely one. I knew it's something with e6. :)

e6?

shell_knight

Would I win?  Maybe not, but I think I could make it really annoying for black.

My low-time idea would be to push e6, but not try to queen it or find anything special, just be willing to trade it to get black's h and d pawns (or at least try) then use my better positioning (his king should still be trapped on the first few ranks) to try and win the f pawn.

And from there use the 2 pawn advantage to win.

Or in other words, when there's almost definitely nasty tactics but you have no time to calculate them, just posture like you'll execute them, and use their passive defensive moves to win in a prosaic way.

I can win from any position in less than 5 seconds

e6 seems like a really forcing move.

If the king moves, it's mate. If any other black piece moves, then e7+ successfully queens the pawn.

shell_knight

Oh, yeah, 42.e6 threatens e7 right away so instantly wins.

MSC157

Actually it's 44.e6, but some moves have to be different then.

e6 Re5 Rgf7 or e6 Re3 e7 Kxg7 queen.

Rh7, then e6?  But to answer your question; no, no i would not win this with just 36 sec.  I would have gone for the draw as well.  In fact I did that just today.  I had an advantage against a higher rated opponent, but got in time trouble and squandered it.  I went into panic mode and was able to get a repition with 3 seconds left in a 30 min. game Sealed I was happy.

I would play Rd7 instantly before having calculated it properly.

Thank you all for your insights. I go with chester6, finding a mate in 20+ something in 36 seconds is not the safest bet, so in hindsight I feel that it was the right decision.

However here is another somewhat interesting game, albeit in correspondence ( in reality it was played as a slow live game ).

After a well played opening I wanted to put more pressure by playing my rook on the 7th in my opponent's stomach, but he found a crushing move: attacking the rook and cutting the defense of the knight at the same time. I felt that I made terrible blunder, and this was in a game against an opponent, who defeated me earlier in a won position with a similar, humiliating knight move. There was nothing to do but to sac the other rook. What a shame! I had to use all my resources to keep up pressure an exchange down. After the game I felt that I miraculously maneuvered myself out of a lost position. However the engine says otherwise: the rook sac was a +2 move! The blunder came the next move... This game felt very different subjectively than the objective analysis would suggest, I must say.

The engine says I was never really losing this ( may be I was slightly worse ), but I felt for a long time that I was heavily losing:

I don't see how that's an easier line than mine.

EDIT: Nevermind, you meant the draw.

LoekBergman

But what is the best move? If Rd7 is not the best move, what is wrong in my calculations?

Scottrf

40. Rd7 Rxe5

Thanks, :-)

watcha, this diagram is so nice. What are you using to get this?
