Can't get rating back

I was recently playing at a 1400+ level, even got to 1496 at my highest, but I went on a long losing streak, and now am struggling to even maintain 1300. I've gone as low as 1200, but I can't seem to get back to where I was. I'm not sure what is going on or what to do about it. I've gone through puzzles and playing bots, I have the same knowledge of tactics as I did before, but I just can't seem to get back to even 1350. Any advice or how anyone has dealt with this before? I'm out of ideas.

If you look at the graph of your blitz rating, you had a couple of days in early March where your rating rose by 200 points.

Other than that, your rating is actually fairly close to the level it had been for a long time.

Why you played so well on those days, I don't know.

I was progressing the entire time of last year. I'm not where I'm supposed to be. I'm supposed to be getting better. Thank you for your insight but it is not useful. I was in an uptrend, but something is going on. I need real solutions rather than being told I'm "where I should be. " That is loser talk.

How does everyone else get through a situation like this rather than give up and say, "Oh well, I'm just stuck here and that's as good as I'll ever be."?

Any advice is appreciated. I don't want to end up worse than I was last year. There has to be someone else in this situation.

Everyone has good days and bad days. There are days you're just seeing everything and playing above your actual level, and there are days you're missing obvious moves and playing below your actual level. Everyone has peaks and valleys. Tilt happens. As far as getting better, it's the usual: study, do puzzles, analyze your games, play slower time formats, etc...

Does it usually take 2 months to get back to normal? Is there any resource I can go to to fix this problem? I took a break for a week and just did puzzles and play the engine at a 1800 level. I still can't get back to normal. This is really bothering me, and I really need help.

In my experience, the lower your rating goes here the more difficult your games become to a point.

Well first you have to understand that your peak is not your normal until you can maintain it for a while, and then it won't be your peak anymore. As far as how long it takes, I believe it's a case by case and it depends on the person.

In my opinion, you should  take a little break from playing and try to focus on improving your openings tactics an strategy (and when you play try to focus on the quality of the game and less on the amount of games that you play).

This is the typical correct answer... people confuse a new peak with their new normal.

Peaks are not your strength. Peaks are when you're overrated. It was expected for you to go on a losing streak... problem solved.

This is particularly true when new peaks are achieved via rematches.

If you want new results you have to change the way you've been doing things.

To improve, pick something you haven't studied. Or study in a new way (with a board, and take notes in a notebook). Or change the way you play... play a (longer) time control you don't normally play.

Normally people avoid these things because they are uncomfortable. For example many people don't like endgames, so studying endgames would be annoying. Some people love no increment blitz, so playing rapid games with increment would be annoying. But when you try new things (and study) then you develop new skills... and when you do the same things over and over that's when people get stuck.

In your last few losses I notice you've been losing in ~25 moves or less... this is not normal... beginners might have an average game length of 25 moves, but you're too high rated for this... so it means you're on tilt or not in your right mind.

Often it's hard to self-evaluate your own condition, so some people set a rule for themselves before they begin playing. For example that they will stop playing rated games for that day after their 3rd loss. This helps you limit your play to when you're in good condition, and will naturally raise your rating.

As for how to avoid your first 3 games being losses... play a few warmup games. Also pay attention to how much sleep you're getting and when / how much you're eating. Don't play rated games when you're very hungry or right after eating a big meal.

I find that playing chess in limited amounts prevents a massive rating decrease, refrain from excessive playing and see if that helps.

I don't mean to be unsympathetic, but it's so comforting to read that others are having the same problem as me. I hit 1127 and felt I could beat players 100 points above me. Then, for some reason, I lost my mojo. I started losing and now am rapidly sinking towards 1000 and can't beat players 100 points below me. I would be at 1000 now if I hadn't had a couple undeserved wins (opponents resigning after a couple moves). I have no idea what's happening, but my confidence is shaken and I find myself expecting to lose. As soon as my opponent shows up, the first thing I look at is how many rating points I'll lose when I lose the game. Trying to keep perspective....this will pass (I hope) and whatever happens I'll enjoy the game.
Worst case scenario, I go all the way down to 700 or so, and maybe start winning again. wink

I just lost 150 points maybe yesterday. It doesn't bother me but if it did I'd stop playing for about three days and then start again when I wasn't feeling tired. I know what does it. Having the flu virus. Covid is just flu.

Just got over covid. When I was down with it, I was playing up to 10 (rapid) games a day. I didn't feel great, but was playing a lot better than I am now. And I agree...if they would have just called it the covid flu from the beginning, things would have been a lot different....and better.
