Capablanca Chess Club Havana

Two years ago I had the pleasure of spending several afternoons playing Chess at the Capablanca Chess Club in Havana. I flew there from Can Cun. A 94 year old Cuban beat me four games in a row. While most of the members are older men, there was one regular player who is only ten. The man who runs the club told me the kid is a prodigy and will someday earn his place in the world of Chess. His name is Chu Chu and he goes there everyday after school. The guy who runs the place is also his mentor. Chu Chu also beat me four games in a row. I am going back to Cuba in March and I plan to take a half a dozen tournament quality chess sets to donate to the club. The ones they are playing on right now are really sub standard. As I walked around Havana, I saw folks playing Chess in front yards and side walk coffee cafes'. Chess is alive and well in Cuba!

You may not want to advertise your breaking federal law on the internet... just sayin. It is a stupid law, but you know how the feds are...

I travel under a treasury department license that a friend of mine has been issued allowing him and those who work for him to travel to and do business in Cuba. In the not too distant future I plan to open a Blues bar in Havana. I was amazed to see how friendly Cubans were to a guy who is very obviously an American. I look forward to playing more Chess with my new friends when I return. This post is about Chess and I have no interest in any discussion about politics.

It doesn't violate federal law if you travel there from a foreign country and don't bring back anything into the U.S. from Cuba.  My criminal justice teacher told me this

No, I hear Cuba is a wonderful country, particularly for us woodpushers. Its a crying shame that we continue ineffective cold war policies for no good reason other than bullheaded pride. I've never been, but had a bunch of Cuban friends when I lived in Florida, and they take their chess very seriously indeed! Of course, after drinking a couple cups of cuban coffee, everything becomes more serious.

As for the comments that you can go, I don't believe so. I believe the law prohibits any commerce with Cuba at all. Bobby was basically banished for going to play in a chess tournament, as I recall.

In any event, enjoy your blues bar in cuba! That sounds like a pretty awesome life. Playing chess by day, running a bar by night... need a partner?

I think the laws are different now. I’m thinking about making a trip next year and play some chess while I’m there.
