Carlsen's opinion on Vladimir Kramnik

Carlsen isn't playing, lmaooo.

In an interview with NRK during the 2014 Candidates (which we reported here) he really let rip:

Kramnik thinks he knows everything.

It’s very impressive how Kramnik reels out variations and so on, and it’s not so easy to discern if you don’t understand the game well yourself, but if you look a little deeper it’s often nonsense. He always plays very principled chess, but the biggest difference between him and me is that he makes a lot more mistakes. Often he seems to think he’s in the right, but I’m actually right.

He’s very confident. He’s not afraid of anyone. He doesn’t think I’m better than him. He doesn’t think Aronian’s better than him and he doesn’t think Anand is better than him. He actually loses games to Nakamura, but he certainly doesn’t believe Nakamura is better than him.

Kramnik is one of those who has beaten me before, and he’s very self-confident and arrogant. He thinks he can beat everyone, a bit like me. Using football terminology, he's good on the ball. He's good if he gets pressure from the opening and an initiative. When he’s under pressure himself he’s nowhere near as good.

As for Hikaru:

Magnus has called Nakamura "inept", "Kvakkamura" (which translates to Quackamura). He said that Nakamura has won a few "Mickey Mouse tournaments this year but now it's time to face the big boys". He made this statement after performing relatively poorly in a blitz event (but still beating Nakamura with the white pieces), and said that his poor performance was because "he played Nakamura-style" and it "simply wasn't good enough". He has said that "Jon Hammer is closer in strength to Nakamura than Nakamura is to me". - 2016

And of recently, he said this to GM Giri Anish: Win a tournament for the first time in your life, and maybe people will start taking you seriously.

Very interesting post about Magnus thoughts on other players.

Please don't hesitate to post more especially recent posts or older will do too about elite players and what magnus thinks about them.

dannyhume
The Muhammad Ali / Conor MacGregor approach, I like it... has he softened with age?
ESP-918

Oh man this is GREAT 👏 nice posts!

MacGregor style lmao

ESP-918

Magnus is actually very cocky and arrogant

Success, hard won, builds confidence. Success easily won builds arrogance. Arrogance is never more than a misstep from a fall.

So you're saying Magnus won his success easily?

Pride goeth before the fall!

Crazychessplaya

The quoted article was written in 2014. Mayhap a visit to an oculist is in order?

Nonsense. I don't see anything preventing it from going before spring, summer or winter.

One could argue that fall is always before spring, summer, and winter.

MagnumC

Wow I am surprised by this article and Magnus comment on an all time legend.

Not if you can back it up. Which he does.

It's not a fact, it's your opinion. I don't think he's cocky and arrogant. I know you're smarter than this, but please don't go down the peurile "Carlsen fanboy" road.

Which World Champion was considered "humble"? That is probably a better question to ask.

Rasta_Jay

When Kramnik retired recently this is what Magnus tweeted " Later today, FIDE will announce the wildcards for the candidates have been abolished"

This is what Fabi wrote "Vladimir Kramnik is one of the greatest players of all time and certainly one of the most influential figures for our understanding of the game. His understanding and creativity is something I've always admired. Sad to see him leave competitive chess.

One of them is mature, the other one? not so much

Magnus doesn't open up to the press all that often, but when he does, he tends to speak the truth as he sees it. He can be brutally honest about his own play, and he is just as honest about other payers. He doesn't seem to have much training in diplomacy, but he think he is giving his honest thoughts.

Typical Carlsen. That is why even his mum doesn't like him

Actually, Carlsen seems to have been lucky in having a very close, totally supportive  family. But he does have the habit of saying what he thinks without employing many diplomatic euphemisms. But anyone who has seen Kramnik interviewed is familiar with his customary "I stood much better in the opening," and "Of course, I was absolutely winning" routine. Even when he lost
