I don't think you can challenge someone to a live game unless you're both in live chess.
Once there, whether from "chat" or "friends" you can right click on someone's name and that challenge will be for a live game.

i would appreciate some info on the mechanics of challengimg a player to a game in any of the above formats. Whenever I click on a players name and attempt to challenge them I appear only able to challenge in an on line format which is not what I want to play at any given time.
