With everything being online, such as chess tournaments, cheating is more accessible. Hear me out, in a physical chess tournament you would have to take the risk and do it. But nw you just open a new page and BAM! You can cheat.
When you get these thoughts, most of the time you can usually tell yourself that it is not right and stop. Sometimes you go, “hmmmm....it is a lot easier than actually doing the work of calculating and playing our best.” And finally sometimes you go ahead and cheat. Sometimes the moderators don’t catch you, the chess engines don’t catch you. And then you think “I am so smart, I can get away with it too.”
The truth comes out, it always does. Whether it be through game report or through your soon to be opponent in chess.com. There are multiple ways to find the truth.
When you finally admit you have a problem to yourself you feel the need to justify it. One such case would be, “Mom, Dad, I just used it once and then I couldn’t stop. I tried so hard to stop. I really did, but something just kept telling me I had too.”
You then end up convincing yourself and everyone you have a problem, but in reality you were fully aware of what you were doing. You thought I have done it before and no one caught me, if I do it again no one will still catch me.
Eventually you continue this facade and end up doing it again afterwards. That isn’t something to be proud of.
The best way, people will tell you, is to be honest. Let’s all be for real for a moment. If you tell the truth no one is ever going to trust you again. At the same time you NEED to tell the truth so how do you do it?
My recommendation would be to go to a counselor or a therapist and get a chance to tell them how you feel. While you’re at it, redeem yourself, volunteer. Now it isn’t the prime time to do this I understand, but at least write down how you feel. This will only work if you actually want to stop.
That is only one scenario.
This is also what can happen. You could have realized that cheating was bad and no one has caught you yet, and you want to STOP. The problem is if you stop they will catch you because you aren’t consistent. In that case, you should stop playing games for a while and focus on tactics and strategy. That way when you play games again (without computer help) you will have improved a lot and you won’t get in trouble.
I think this is the best solution though. Delete you chess.com account and create a new one. Like a fresh start. Clean slate. In this account don’t cheat. Just say you got locked out or something and do YOUR BEST. NO CHEATING. PLAY YOUR BEST.
This is meant to help anyone who wants to STOP. Not to encourage cheating.
THE BEST WAY TO SOLVE A PROBLEM IS TO FIRST ADMIT YOU HAVE IT.
To the general population on chess.com cheaters are doing something wrong, yes. Most of the time though, they are kids. The only way for them to get better is for them to first realize it is wrong. If they get reported on chess.com, all it will do is encourage them to cheat better which is not what we want. We want it to stop as a whole. So pleas don’t be hateful to the people who have done something wrong and instead help them get better.
