If you wer in check and then when you moved you went into check again, you made an illegal move. If there were no moves that you could have done getting out of check that wouldn't end in check again, then it was checkmate.
Check and Check mate

Yeah, isn't that wierd? I've always found it very easy to calculate forward variations but calculation variations in reverse can be much harder for some reason.

Are you guys sure she's not talking about some kind of perpetual check, in which case it would be a draw?

Knightlady, do you mean that your king was in check and your move to get out of check put you in check again from a different piece of your mother's?

Yes. It was our 2nd game and we were still trying to figure out check and mate. I moved my piece out of check by one of her pieces and into check from another piece. What confuses me is what happens next. Do I redo the move or does she win because her next move would essentially be to capture me? Because I move from one check to another am I supposed to take back both moves?

The rules state that the king can never be captured. For that reason, your move was illegal and must be taken back. Then you must figure out if there are any possible moves for you to escape check. This can be done by moving your king, capturing the piece that is giving check, or by interposing another of your pieces to block the check.
If none of those things are possible, it is checkmate.
I was playing with my mom (we're both learning), and I moved from one Check situation into another. How do we proceed when that happens?
