What basic recommendations would you make to a player who is starting to play at 960?

Look to activate your queens/bishops from where they are and try to reach familiar structures. In the opening as white, whichever move disallows symmetry for black is usually the best move (ie if white plays f4 and black can respond f5 without repercussions it's probably suboptimal). I'm not a chess960 expert so that's about all I really know.

Don’t overthink the randomness—normal chess strategy still works.

960 is still real chess in my opinion. They say you shouldnt play bullet chess unless you are under 2000 rating or something like that. Ive played 8500 games of chess on this account and i love 960. It really lowers the bar to reduce repetitive games. So when you play it. You need to grasp patterns and strategies that classical players knew. No more chess videos on youtube to pretend you are smart or clever. You have to formulate by true chess strategies and qualities.
