chess and alcohol

Joseph Henry Blackburne drank whiskey during his over-the-board play because he felt it cleared his brain and improved his chessplay:  "Whiskey stimulates the imagination...."  (I assume moderation is implied here).  I find the same to be true in my experience, sipping on a Jameson, neat:  my head is cleared, my body relaxed.  Anyone else here able to mix chess and alcohol (whiskey, vodka, rum....) and still give a decent, if not winning, performance?

yeah sometimes at parties i ll play chess, and a couple of shots can give me really inspired chess.  i can t play chess with a headache, but if a shot or two loosens me up, it really works.

Sometimes I drink small amounts whilst playing over the Net and at first I find it relaxes me, but I've found that too many small amounts leads me into a false sense of security resulting in major blunders.  There is also the added problem that I am not allowed to drink in face-to-face matches, etc.

The second best game I ever played, against Fritz 6 even, I was blitzed. Sometimes alcohol can just drop away all of the clutter and you can just play profound, clear chess, other times unfortunately, you can just drop away a rook, but at least you'll probably just laugh at the silliness of it all anyway.

Never mixed a game with alcohol.  That would be a cocktail best left to those who think it makes them see "clearer".

Yes, loads of times. I've played chess on here when I couldn't even think straight, sometimes you play brilliantly, sometimes you play crap. It's enjoyable though. :)

I don't personally drink at all when playing but a friend that competes in shooting told me that very small ammount of alcohol increase the ability to concentrate and that's why alcohol counts as doping in some sports (not sure how much truth is in this).

I got quite drunk last Saturday night while playing chess. It caused me to screw up a lot of my games. No thank you - never again!

I play at about a 1500 uscf level OTB. but My play on this site is horrid and contains many foolish blunders because i generally only drink and play on this site. But to each his own

I once played chess at the handicap of, 1 shot per win, 5 minute blitz.  After 6 wins in a row though, I was declared champion regardless.  Also had a friend do this to me w/ soul caliber.  He won 10 in a row still, and yes he's still alive.  :b
