The "subtle tactical error", Mana, was the continual use of girlfriend instead of partner. I think that anyone who is stupid enough to make an error to give the win to his opponent because of some romantic entanglement is sadly deluded if he (because a woman would never do that. We have the killer instinct when it comes to defeating the weeker sex) thinks that will win him any favours. Imparciality is the name of the game! The only way I see the scenario playing out advantagiously is if the game is being used as a precursor to sexual activity.
Chess and Romance [PG]

I would never play chess with my wife, because she's probably about 1000 rating points below me, so there'd be no challenge (besides, she's a horrible loser). Thus she'd know that if she won, it'd be because I let her, which would defeat the purpose. Besides, I can think of better ways to get her excited - but since this is a PG thread, I won't tell you about them.
I did once ask her to play a game, with me blindfolded, just to show off, but she didn't want to. But now, I don't need to show off to her anymore.

I find your idea of always defeating the weeker sex(male or female?), a bit contradictory to what love means between the weeker and stronger sex on a larger scale. If you say a romantic entaglement to be delusional, then perhaps, it's more apt to be called a Chess Delusion to set trap to win the other person's heart. Winning or Losing doesn't matters in this case, and the satisfaction gained by playing the game together can be used as a precursor to a long-lasting relationship between the two partners.
Female of the species is more dangerous than the male. I wish I had that killer instinct too.
She felt like a chess player who, by the clever handling of his pieces, sees the game taking the course intended. Her eyes were bright and tender with a smile as they glanced up into his; and her lips looked hungry for the kiss which they invited.
How is playing Chess with your girlfriend different from playing with other people? What are the relative advantages and disadvantages when you win or lose such romantic games with your girlfriend?
Also, would anyone intentionally wish to lose when playing with his girlfriend, by making a subtle tactical error, but obvious enough for his girlfriend to see and force him into checkmate. If yes, why?
[PS: No offence is intended towards the women players here. I am asking the above questions in the spirit of Chess being a mind game and it's complex relationship with romance from a psychological point of view. However, your constructive opinions will definitely help to understand the Chess relationships in a better way.]
Has this anything to do with why the chess championships are arranged seperately for men and women.
