Great insights @apesusa and @nightcross! Thanks for the responses. My goal is to study hard and work my way to 1200 blitz rating. I have much to learn, no doubt.

And to all the naysayers, thanks for fueling my fire.

900-1000 is okay. Yet it's still considered amateur. It's about the 40-50 percentile of players. I've been playing every day for 3 months and I just hit a blitz score of 1005. I knew how to play the game before I started, but this is the first time I've really decided to learn and try to play the game. Even though I've been playing every day, I've only played 100 blitz games. I've read a lot about how to become better at chess and most consistently people say "Do not play blitz if you want to become better." Although, it's hard to stay away from it. It's pretty fun. Yet if you want to play blitz and succeed, you should play longer games of chess first. If you've played 2000 games and haven't passed the 50% mark, really consider reviewing your games. A grandmaster told me you shouldn't even start to play blitz unless you're score is around 1600 in rapid or longer games. Anyway. Starting from 500 and advancing to 900 is still something to be proud of yourself for.

I started around around 1000 in blitz and read a lot of books and studied my games. Also getting a coach helps too if you have the money. I'm averaging around 1650 now in blitz and still increasing steadily.

I don't play chess here, and your point is....? If I did I'd be a hell of a lot higher rated than you. If this sites developers ever make an android app that doesn't suck ass, I might start playing here again.

Says the guy who hasn't played a game on chess.com. Hey Eat My Shorts , your rating is 1200 but everyone has a 1200 rating when they sign in. You haven't played a game yet. Douche

1200 is horrible and still far worse than your average beginner.

I get into the 900's then  have a few red wines and drop back  to the 800's but I enjoy the game and the challenges.    That is what it is about isn't it?

Man I started to play a lot for two weeks and enjoyed it. Now I am slightly getting bored...it's a nice game but I really have the impression I go by habit. When I start a game I am almost wishing it sends up fast. I guess chess is not my stuff after all. I think it's an amazing game but can not understand how people can get the passion for it for so long...2 weeks was almost enough for me. Well let see happy.png

I have played 2042 10 min blitz games and my rating is 911. Is this a rating that is considered high? What is my General chess rating ? Thanks !

It is very poor. But if your whole chess life is 2000 games you just need to know the game better. Play with people who know the game and give proper advice. If you read a book say (no pun intended, really) chess for dummies I'm quite sure your score would be easily above 1100 if not more. Just by knowing the basic principles of chess your score will go up significantly. Also, play weak players online. Anybody in the 1800s say who plays a grandmaster everyday will have a score close to 0.

I literally just started and am maintaining around 500 after 57 games. What I try to do is review each game and find my biggest mistakes/blunders.  I also utilize lessons, puzzles, and tactics while waiting for other games.  My understanding is that it takes some time to really get good. Is this correct or should I do other things as well?

My advice is to play longer time control, take your time and deeply review your game, preferably with a higher-rated opponent. For me, what elevated my game was playing in local and state tournaments. The experience you get even playing a 15 min tournament is phenomenal. First, develop an opening repertoire that is flexible (e.g. Queen's gambit exchange the d pawn or London System) and after your comfortable with chess (where blunders are much less) then start looking deeper into openings, middle game, positional tactics and endgame basics.

Good luck with your endeavour, however becoming better is not just talking, you really have to comitt to more than a few blitz games every day.

After 2 years from this post, i'm now 1500-1600 in blitz!

Nice going!

As long as you are improving then you are doing well.  Blitz is difficult and it is going to take a while to climb the ratings.  When you reach 1,000 and you are better than about 50% of the blitz players then you could definitely say you have a good rating.  Some people have being playing blitz for many years so it is not so easy to beat them.

@Giants0711 I used to be rated in your area for blitz. I normally play 5 min. Anyway if you want to improve you should probably get better at tactics and learn some basic opening principles like controlling the center. Through tactics you will learn about forks and skewers and at your rating area that should bring you up to 1100. I am not an expert I am just 1400 but that is what helped me improve

If you are above 400 rating, you are a very good chess player.

...what?

FatetoForever

I have played 85 Blitz games, and I'm about 1400, so that should give you a decent idea.

Is my 841 rating good for 290 games?
