I don't think there is. I asked about that too. I think you either have to go through it on a board or get yourself a chess engine. Doesn't have to be expensive, I just downloaded one.
Chess Board where you can randomly place pieces

Try this program, you can set up position and play from it...
http://www.chess.com/download/view/portable-winboardx--rybka-22---updated-setup
Go to "Mode" -> "Edit position" and with right-click on board you can arrange pieces to your liking...
When you are finished don't forget to exit setup mode ("Mode" -> "Edit game" or choose what color will engine play)
gardelin, that is spot on mate! cheers :-)

I found this on a seperate site
[removed, there's no need to go to a different site for the feature -- MS]
I'm planning to read that book - do you think it would be good for an 1800 rated player on chess.com?

Thank you Teiiaa!

Chess.com provides an integrated solution for people who want to place Chess pieces whatever the way they wish. the following link, hopefully, will send you to this solution:
you will find a button, probably on the top right corner, tagged 'New Room.' press this button. the rest is easy to come-by, you should be able to discover it yourself.

I just downloaded the Chess.com app to my iPhone. I found that the previous explanations were outmoded. What is relevant on the current app is to locate the Learn button at the bottom of the home page. You click on that, then you click on “Analysis”, and then you click on “Set Up Position”. Now you drag the pieces that you want onto the board manually. To remove a piece, you just drag it off! So you can move the pieces on the board to whichever squares you want without any legality restrictions!

Hi All,
Not sure if im missing anything here, but im currently reading through Jeremy Silmans 'Reassess your chess' - im just wandering if there is anything on this site where I can place pieces arbitrarily on a board, and then 'start' a game from there, enabling me to go back x moves, or go back to the 'beginning' - the chess wizard option on the forum posts doesnt let me do this, and seems to stop me from playing certain moves. As said, I may have missed something, so let me know :-)
cheers,
