Chess board with algebraic notation on the board

I posted a while ago, under the wrong category so I am reposting here:

My brother learned chess the "Old-Fashioned" way, by using the position of a piece relative to the King or Queen.

Ex: The Kings, rook, pawn 2.

He is having trouble with the algebraic notation system.

Does anyone know where he may be able to purchase a set that has the algebraic notations printed on the board, or possibly a plastic overlay, or any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

^^^ As listed above, pretty much any tournament board has algebraic printed along the side, and a vinyl board with good plastic pieces is only going to run you $20 or so.

I found a nice looking board for $49.99 with letters and numbers.
Here is a link in case anybody wants one.

I just used a black Sharpy marker on mine. My girlfriend did it and it came out perfectly for my two wooden boards. Eveything is lined up nice and neat it looks like it came that way.   Cool

Pretty much all of the cheap vinyl sets will have the grid written right on it

i just wish people would turn it on when they post games and puzzles in the forums.  save my meager brain from having to point at the screen with "a..b..c..1..2..wait, i started counting on the second rank...a..b.."

I agree with planeden. It would be nice to have a reference on the site to look at.

I took a sharpie to my home set.  If you wanted to add the algebraic temporarily,  use masking tape or white dot stickers.  Yard sale stickers are intended to peel off easily, and wouldn't damage a board.

There was only descriptive notation when I learned chess.  It was awkward for me to change at first to algebraic, but now I think it is by far the best notation. Each square is always the same notation no matter which color one is playing.

When I was teaching myself chess I wrote the descriptive notation on one of my boards. Yes each square,  I had to, because all of the chess books were in descriptive and attempting to learn all there was to learn and keep up with which square was which just made it easier for me.

I created a board for my neice & nephew with algebraic notion in cute colors with crayons........ they destroyed it..... It was way too distracting. They eventually learned anyway and they were seven & eight years old at the time. I'm sure you'll be fine.

If he already has a board then the cheapest and most professional solution is to go to an art supply store and get some vinyl "peel off, stick on" lettering. Depending on the size of the border you could go 1/4" or 1/2".  To do a truly professional job will take some time to get the spacing perfect but it's worth it if you have a nice board.  Obviously available online as well; I've used both black and white depending on the border.  Of course vinyl, silicone, mousepad "roll up" boards are cheap and readily available at any chess store if you don't want to go to the trouble.

EDIT: Just realized this is a three year old thread...Nevermind.

Can someone help me? I have Irving Chernev’s  book (paper edition) PRACTICAL Chess Endings (1961), but I cannot understand his notation of the squares. For instance, the normal way of describing the move of a king is of course for instance 1 Kb5. But Mr. Chernev, when describing the black king’s move across the board to stop a pawn, from b3 diagonally to the right, is described as 1 .... K-B5 2 .... K-Q4  3....... K-K3  4....... K-B. ???

Could someone translate and explain the system?

Last message: last move should be 4..... K-B2.

I don't know why you are posting to a forum created 10 years ago and someone who was last online in 2016

ninja888

Why are you saying this if he will never respond

ninja888

Oh ok.

ninja888

Well that's mainly because this is an old forum that was only revived one day ago
