Yes, it is very cool. I recently found a website which helps those who want to play chess with prison inmates called Correspondence Chess with Prisoners located at this link. The goal is to bring inmates and those wishing to play chess by mail together for games. I hope this helps future people in playing chess with inmates!

Nice!

If I were an inmate....

I have been doing this for few years now. For the inmates I would have to mail a chhess board to them by printing out a picture of chessboard out and simply writing in the pieces with one side (Inmates) in pencil and my side in colored pencil I would erase and draw in move then send back and forth. It really helps their time go by. Right now I am in Three games with Two Elmwood jail and One in Delano. Cool

there are lots of chessboards in jail.  they are sold usually for between 9.95$ and 14.95$ on commisary.  Commisary is where inmates can order their snacks, like candybars, salmon, cheese, and soups also of course your soaps and deoderant.  They have playing cards, walkmen, tv's and course chess/checker boards.

I even saw someone make a set pieces out of toilet paper once.  Like paper machete with water.  form the pieces and dry them on a window sil..  then color the black peices with a #2 pencil.  If nothing else inside,, you have time.

Do them a real favor and send them a subscription to chess magazine.  It is on the approved list of reading material,, any books on chess that would be in the library there have a way of disappearing...

Estragon, the statistics for america are telling.  America has what 75% percent of the worlds inmate population with its low by comparison population.  and what is it some 1 in 24 american's are either incarcerated or on parole/probation.  I found it funny that after the Dot Com bust how many tech execs went into the business  of prison building infarstructure.  Then you have judges being indicted for handing out longer sentences from kickbacks by warden's and prison officials. Jails get huge money from local and federal government to house inmates.  Out west now they are doing the Inmate work programms.  Building motorcycles, farming fish, leather goods.  If the prison ships across state lines the inmate must make at least minimum wage.

most aren't evil as you say... some however very much belong there.

Had to laugh about the soap anecdote.  As soap is about 3 dollars a bar and very coveted.  You'll find food in the pot of a poker game before soap! lol

I'm interested in playing chess via mail with people that are incarcerated.

The way the American justice system is now, it makes me wonder how many are actually innocent....if you have money you can get a better lawyer and fairer treatment....fewer people have any extra money now than ever before in the U.S.....although the ones that do have money tend to have a lots more...

How about playing chess with the families of the victims?

Zoomiewoop
It’s very good to play with family members of victims of crime also. You can do both. The difference is that those on the outside have many opportunities to play chess with others (going to a chess club, using online communities or apps like chess.com) that those on the inside don’t have. Also many (but not all) who are incarcerated were themselves victims. If I were incarcerated, I would be very grateful for any kind soul who was willing to play correspondence chess with me. Things that allow you to really exercise the mind are few and far between on the inside.

I’m playing a game with an inmate through a USCF correspondence tournament.. he’s a nice guy and a damn good chess player. Manny people don’t know but correspondence through the mail still exists and has its own championships.
