Chess Capital of the World
Chess city is a joke, and its president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is a raging nutter who claims to have been abducted by aliens amongst other goofball feats. Perhaps if he actually fed his people instead of dedicating millions of dollars to a board game he would be taken seriously.
New York is a very strong epicenter for chess although calling it the chess capitol might be a bit of a stretch.

It is probably not reasonable to name any one city as the chess capital of the world. Chess is very popular in Europe and Asia - much more so than in the United States. New York can most likely lay claim to the chess capital of the United States.
Which city in the world is the keenest on chess? Say, for number of chess clubs, players, tournaments etc.? I know that Howard Lederer (now a pro poker player) initially went to New York to pursue his passion for chess. Is there a long tradition of chess playing there?
