Hello everyone,

I’m a undergraduate student and I just started to play and to learn chess in which I have great fun !

I was wondering is there any way to have a recognized certification or an equivalent that somehow prove our elo level ?
I’m a undergraduate student and I wish I could mention some kind of achievement of this new passion on my personal CV.

Of course. Just play in some over the board tournaments when you get better.

If you play in over the board chess competitions then you and your elo rating get listed on the web site of your national chess federation. If you play in FIDE competitions then you and your elo rating get listed on the FIDE web site.

What is achievement for you?

If you have a hobbies section on your CV, just putting the word chess on it should suffice. If the person reading it is also interested in chess then they will likely ask you about it, and it they are not interested in chess they will not know or care about the difference between a 1000 rating and a 2000 rating.

Playing chess well involves a lot of skills that are useful in business and other areas of your life. Things like motivation, determination, persistence, detailed analysis, planning out future scenarios - you can find many lessons in chess that can also be translated to other areas of your life. So put it on your CV and let the reader decide whether they are interested to know any more.

It is very questionable how much of your chess trully can be transfered to other areas in life, but thankfully few people actually knows that.

If you going to put it on CV as more than "hobbies I do beside watching tv and breathing to appear as a normal and intresting person", I would recommend to either have some kind of title or be involved with helping your local club organize activities or lessons.

Hello everyone, thank you for your responses.

Concerning the board chess competitions, how does it actually work ? For instance, with the current pandemy it is quite hard to have face-to-face meeting, so is it online ?
If so, I’m always afraid that there are too many « fake low Elo » in other words smurf players.. So it would be hard to really even win or evaluate my level.

I depends from country to country. In some countries over the board chess is forbidden. In some it is allowed with some restrictions like face masks, proof of vaccination, negative PCR test, distance, ventilation...

There are also FIDE online competitions with provisions: cheating check, mandatory screen sharing, mandatory cameras, mandatory FIDE arbiter present as proctor.

I too have questions on chess certification besides on the fide ratings.

@Shibakun01: As @tygxc said, it depends on the country, pretty sure my local chess club was open since autumn. So my best advice to you, both for competition and your regular chess activity, is to get to both your local club and your university club and become member in both. They can help much better with this type of questions, with how you should train and get better at chess and being active in one/two clubs (I guess your undergrad is same as our swedish/bologna 3 years bachelor so you have a couple years + 1-2 if you also take a master's) and I mean really active in both playing chess as well as doing club work would look much better than what you could achive in elo in same time.

Unless you get to atleast Class A, your elo would be as impressive on CV/resume as a green/blue belt in judo... that is not impressive at all.
