Chess, Coffee, and Cheating

Is drinking coffee before a chess game considered cheating?

:)

yourChess

Why? It is the same thing with gum. A recent discovery shows that of you chew gum before any thing that you get at least 15-20 minutes of better concentration.

I believe it is not cheating.

NRTG

No it is not cheating. caffeine is not a banned substance and therefore it is just like a footballer drinking lucozade or eating a specific meal before a game.

I recently played a match at Caribou Coffee against an opponent who shared my passion for the game. It was fun, but several topic related issues came up...

The man was jittery, full of Caribou Nectar, and fumbled pieces; leading to disputes of piece placement. Another issue that came up about three times...urination. The man went to the bathroom three times! Little did I know, he could have been staring in the mirror practicing his next planned move of intimidation.

I beat the shaking man in the end...but better yet, winner buys the next round of coffee for the loser.

Had myself a lot of coffee that day...Wink

Spoiler: I was playing myself. lol.

I don't think talking about drinking coffee is the type of 'discussions about cheating' which must only take place in that group.

Coffee is so generally accepted that I don't think anybody would worry about their opponent drinking some. But it does start a slippery=slope type argument- what about people who take amphetamines to improve their play?

If you have experience with drugs, you should know amphetamines aren't going to improve your play.

They, and cocaine, make you hasty, jumpy, delusionally overconfident, and irrational.  Coffee, on the other hand, may sharpen your concentration a bit and make you feel more awake, but won't impart those extreme effects.

Personally, if you want to to drugs and play chess let me recommend this regimen:  Have one alcoholic drink of choice (one beer, glass of wine, or one cocktail or shot), follow that with 3 cups of espresso or cuban coffee, take half a quaalude (or a whole one if you're into that sort of thing), inject yourself with some horse steriods, wait an hour, have another cup of coffee to take the edge off, then right before you're about to start, inject yourself with 50 mL of bovine tranquilizers.  That should give you that whole "alert and ready to pounce but also observant and introspective" mood you'd need to be in for chess.

Of course, you could just try LSD like everyone else.  It did wonders for Silman!

Do you even know whats in gum, http://rense.com/general92/lungl.htm

For tournaments coffee usually isn't recommended because it makes you burn all your energy in a couple hours. You will find yourself drooping in the endgame and if you've got another round right after that you're toast.

Still, it seems like a rather pedestrian sort of thing. Athletes can drink Gatorade so why not coffee?

NRTG

I would like to know your thoughts on taking energy drinks to play chess. Regarding amphetimanes i would say the right amount would be of considerable benefit as you would avoid the negative effects while still being kept alert.

johnmusacha

Well, have you ever done amphetimines or cocaine?  You tell me you have and I won't press any further, but I could tell you what a "small" amount of such can do compared to a large one, and neither of them is good for chess.

In any case, what do you consider the "right" amount of crystal meth to snort or smoke before chess, since you brought it up?

blake78613

"Chess, coffee, cheating" is great alliteration.  Just uttering the phrase should win the next presidential debate.  Will the Democrats or Republicans get on the bandwagon first and get into their platform?

johnmusacha

Yep, but it sounds so "blue state," if anyone uses that term anymore.

NRTG

I have experience of standard amphetimane and i would say a small amount is different for everybody. I have no experience with crystal meth however so i can say nothing of that. I would like to stress that i would not recommend that anybody take these drugs to play chess (or for any other reason) as they can cause severe long term damage. It is however worth pointing out that at the highest levels of all sports people take dangerous risks to gain small advantages.

johnmusacha

And to all those kids out there:  Please don't think I'm trying to make light of drug use or trying to encourage taking crystal meth or cocaine.  I'm just from Miami, so you know how that is.

And the "Ornithologist," based upon his title, obviously has a medical degree of some kind.  Plus you know how crazy those bird watchers can get.

NRTG

I am not a real ornithologist i used to play Bird's opening 1 f4. A sort of witty joke as i studied Bird's (not birds). I would definately agree with you about the cocaine thing though.
