I am 1500 bullet on Lichess and 800 on Chess.com. How is that even possible!

They use a similar system.  However, they are different sites, with different groups of people, who start off playing with different starting ratings.   As I understand it, everyone starts on lichess at 1500.   People on Chess.com can start anywhere from 400 to 1600.

Plus, the players on Chess.com are just better.

^^^ ELO ratings are for OTB games run under conditions stipulated by fide. They aren't your rating on this site, lichess or any other site.

I have 100 US dollars and 2000 Mexican pesos. How is that even possible!

Now that last statement is demonstrably false. One only has to compare the percentiles in which one is on each site (that is, what percentage of players is below and above ones rating). Typically one is in a much higher percentile here, there are way more beginners here who have never heard of lichess. Not that it matters, because at the end of the day you will be paired with players of similar strength, regardless of the rating normalization.

Every now and again some dimwit comes with "my rating here is xxx and there it's yyy, how can that be!". This is usually followed by some discussion on the strengths of each site. Even though the following will be ignored:

1) Comparing the strength of players between sites based on different rating systems is like comparing the temperature distribution in the US and Europe based on the fact that one uses Fahrenheit and the other Celsius. Water will freeze at the same temperature, whether you call that temperature 32 or 0.

2) The conversion between the ratings is not as straight forward as adding or subtracting something. Above 2000 they seem to be roughly equal, while the lower you get your lichess rating will be higher. The only way to establish a reliable method of conversion would be to collect data from players that are active on both sites and fit a curve.

3) Comparing the strength of players between both sites is completely unrelated to the rating system used, but can be done based on the distribution. On chess.com, 1600 would put you in the top 3% in bullet. According to https://chessgoals.com/rating-comparison/ ,  the corresponding lichess rating would be around 1800-1850, which would barely put you in the top 20% there. This means that in a hypothetical match, the top 20% of players on lichess would obliterate the top 20% on here.

4) Finally, all that doesn't matter. It's just different units, if you are active on both sites your typical opponents will end up being of similar strength, regardless of what the numbers say.

The opposite is true, chess.com draws in far more beginners for a variety of reasons, and so once you account for the average rating difference between the two Glicko models (mean of ~+395 lichess), there's still a delta of ~+310 for the mean lichess player. The numbers are similar for median ratings.

And then some insel comes along and calls someone a dimwit for asking a legit question. Yeah, business as usual here. wink

It's a legit question that anyone can answer for themselves if they spent 3 seconds thinking about it. Different unit of measurement, as simple as that. Now how the different rating systems work is a different question that can lead to interesting discussions, but this is not what is asked...
