The character's name should be, "Americanman"! He actually never fights crime unless well paid! Every time he does a fireside chat with the people, there is a chess board in the foreground for comedy relief. He doesn't do drugs, unless the smack is prescibed by a "doctor". Americanman's motto is, "The true crime is thinking!"

I used to love reading Marvel and DC comics and think a character who fights crime by playing chess would be a fantastic idea. Just need some extra ideas to push further with the concept.
Quite like the characters Captain chess or Chess-man at the moment.
