Hello All

Is there a list of 500-1000 games that everyone should be at least familiar with?

Famous positions and matches from the well regarded masters etc?

For example, it is claimed Magnus Carslen knows 10,000 master games.

1.The Petrosian exchange sac game with Re6!! with the idea of clearing a space for the knight to fight against white's pawn center.

2.Opera game (of course!)

3.Anderssen-Morphy where Anderssen won with 1.a3 (a great game)

4.Immortal Zugzwang game

5.Schlechter-Lasker round 7

6.Lasker-Napier

7.Pick a random Fischer vs. Larsen or Spassky game

8.Johner-Nimzowitsch Dresden 1926

9. Marshal-Rubinstein Warsaw match round 4 1908

10.Tarrasch-Rubinstein San Sabastian round 6 1911

11.Euwe-Alekhine World Championship Match 4th game Holland 1935

12.Morphy-Rivierre (the one with the rook ending founnd in BCE)

13.Bogolubov-Lasker (the one in Endgame Strategy where Lasker drew a very tough endgame where Bogo dominated the d-file, had more pawns, and Lasker had a bishop and knight against a rook and only rook and knight pawns left)

List in no particular order.

It is regulary quoted in lots of articles about Magnus Carslen. It does sound unreal though I agree.

Good lists there thanks

I am pretty sure the Magnus quote meant he has studied that many games, not necessarily memorized them.

Reti - Bogolubov

The move 25. Be8! is the second-best move in the game... after 13. Bxf3!

Strategically, the forced manoever f2-f3 / e4xf3 / Bxf3 followed by e2-e4 is also very impressive... battering open the closed center.

Against which player was this ?

Reshevsky.  It was played in Zurich I believe.  I think it's Petrosian's most famous game too.

Quite amazing that Carlsen keeps that number stable at 10,000, the effort put into the game disremembering must be enormous
