Someone trying to make a living in chess would be much better off to move to Europe . There is much more support for chess there .
Ouch.
I read that Magnus Carlsen make a million a year, but obviously that is not the norm.
ICC instructors and what they charge for lessons are in the link below. Some GMs charge $40 per hour and some $100+. That's on top of any prize money or sponsorships. If you start a company that creates and sells DVDs on chess etc. then that can be additional income, but who knows how much...

the difference between a gm and a pizza:
a pizza can feed a family of four
Did you know that the original pizza was anchovy pizza?
Pizza was invented by anchovy fishermen.
All other types of pizza are variants of anchovy pizza.

I can't answer you from earlier Reb. I'm scared someone's gonna hunt me down w/ an arrow of bees or make me pet a pit bull or something bad like that.
Well they don't earn a salary as such because a salary means a regular monthly/weekly wage instead chess players earn however much is the prize money for their place in the tournament they're in like for example in Super-GM tournaments like the WCC match or candidates tournament I heard the winner gets quarter of a million but I'm not sure what currency in but FIDE is french so I'd guess it'd be 250,000 euros
why do people become chess GMs if there is no way to make a living out of it
and then why do they complain that there is no prize money to sustain a living when it was already like that before they become a GM ?
do they have no common sense?
why do people become chess GMs if there is no way to make a living out of it
Why do people read books if there is no way to make a living out of it
you should ask those people who trying to make a living out of just reading books
There are probably GMs employed by companies like chess.com (and various others, chess schools, etc.) that make a salary. Some GMs start their own businesses, and pay themselves a salary. Overall, though, it seems like the big money is hard to come by in chess.

Hi,
How much on average does a chess GM earn per year?
I heard that some American players have dropped out of college after they got the GM title. How much money would a 2500 rated player earn in the USA? The fact they are willing to drop out of college to pursue a career in chess sounds like it is very lucrative lifestyle. What is needed to maintain their living? I assume that all they do is fly out to some weekend tournament and play in it. Because the top prizes are usually at least several thousands of dollars.
Also, how much do 2600 rated players typically earn? I guess if you are 2700+ then you are earning at least $300K from all the tournament appearance fees?
thanks,
