Chess GM salary

Another article about making money in the world of chess. Chess is no different from other games. A handful of players make money, most don't. Compare the number of players in the NBA or NFL with the number of basketball and football players in the US.

Its sad do hear that a football player like Pogba that has no brain at all make 20 mill. a year in compear to some GM s that hardly make a million.
How is that sad? Are you an intellectual elitist, you believe people with more intelligence deserve more and it's sad if they don't?

The point is that , the chess Gm's should make more money in compeare to other athletes.
No, the point is that chess, just like any other game/sport, rewards its participants based on market forces.
If a chess game between two GM's had TV execs and advertising sponsors all over it wanting a piece of the action because it sells to a mass audience the GM's would command the same money as the footballer. But chess does not have that appeal and so the rewards are not there to the same degree.

The point is that , the chess Gm's should make more money in compeare to other athletes.
If the market existed for it then chess players would make salaries comparable to pro ball players. There isn't.

Gms in usa make around 32000 dollars a year which is a lot of money. You can buy a brand new Mercedes Benz for 30000 every year

so all I see in the forums is ppl arguing that do tactics and your rating will just go up. now @weakslow your rating is 3600 and your rating about 2000 how do you explain this?
good at tactics bad at chess

The problem is that watching chess masters play is NOT thrilling unless you understand the game well, whereas athletes, singers, acrobats, etc. do things that are easily appreciated. Consequently, we're never going to draw the kinds of crowds and money to chess that are drawn to football, music concerts, etc.
When I was coaching a high school chess team, at one of our club meetings we watched a grandmaster chess game on TV. One player made a strong move and the TV announcer/commentator exclaimed, "There's pandemonium on the chessboard!"
Even my teenage chessplayers laughed at the absurdity of that statement! It was such a joke it became our team's slogan. When I was USCF Tournament Director at some of the Swiss tournaments we were in and too busy to watch all my pkayer's games, they would draw my attention to interesting positions by saying to me, "There's pandemonium at the chessboard!"
If that's what the team that won the 3rd place trophy in the State Scholastic Championships thought of a great move in a grandmaster game, what hope is there that the average person will get interested in it?

I think the opposite is true. It actually costs money to become a GM and it probably costs money to travel so that you can enter tournaments - unless you're a Super GM of some kind that actually has a chance at large prizes - which is a tiny fraction of all GMs. Heck it cost me a few bucks to get started, that's for sure! I got a diamond membership to watch the videos, and do the lessons, and i'm going to save up for a lifetime membership at the Canadian Chess Federation so that I can get a FIDE rating. I also registered at chesstempo.com for a premium membership. It costs a few bucks a month or year, for sure! But the biggest expense is their travel and accommodations (and suits, of which I have none!) so that they can participate in tournaments. Unless they're talented at teaching and have dedicated students, or get lucky with a job opportunity (or streaming), I don't see how most GMs make any money!
The further you are from Russia and from 1972, the less $$$ you will make. We're on the backside of the Cold War chess prominence. Soon the sponsors of the big tourneys will choose to spend their money elsewhere, and of course chess has its own internal issues with engines destroying the creativity and excitement. 2016 GMs are fighting for a slice of a shrinking pie. Carlsen makes big $$$ because he doesn't look like a nerd/neck beard like most GMs.
