I've never been, so I've no idea what it's like, but I happened to be looking at it last night as I was thinking of trying to join.

I'm a Londoner.
I go to the Chess Cafe in the BFI restaurant near Tottenham Court Road, but that's really for women although men are welcome.
The really big place is a pub in Battersea, south-west London. Maybe googling chess and Battersea will find it.
There really isn't anywhere in central London so far as I know.
In London they were in pubs until the owners realised the players took up a lot of space but didn't drink very much.
Hammersmith Chess Club is definitely the best bet in West London - really sociable club, loads of events going on:
Have to recommend my club Battersea. Everyone welcome. Best place to play chess in London
