Yeah, I'm watching that Mentalist episode right now, it's really inaccurate. Seems like they probably looked up a GM game and just stated the moves. Also, at the beginning, they have this contentious dialog with their opening, but it doesn't make sense.
Jane: "Declining the gambit, interesting." (There's no gambit. c4 e6, Nf3 d5)
Jane plays d4, and the opponent says "Oh really?" like it's a surprise. Queen's gambit declined is one of the most common opening. That's probably why Jane mentioned declining the gambit, but it just didn't make sense at that time.
Isn't a bit ridicoulos how chess is shown in TV? I mean, a few days ago I saw a Criminal Minds episode, and in that episode Spencer Reid announced mate in 12 after seeing the chessboard for like 1/10 of a second -.- In a The Mentalist episode Patrick Jane played a game blitzing every move (like less than 1 second per move), then announced mate in 7. Most of the checkmates shown in TV are simply fool's mate
