Chess Intimidation

Ways to intimidate your opponent

  1. Head Nod/smerk - When calculating or When moving a piece, nod your head or smerk to show the opponent that you expected that move, it forces them, realise that you are ahead to the game, and they will play more passively
  2. Piece Movement - When moving a piece, slam it down on the board, because the slow you move the more uncertain you look, but if you move it hard and fast you seem more confident and authoritative.
  3. Physical Apearance - If you look like you are physically hard or tough, your opponent will be scared of you before the game has even began. Or what i do is dress like a chav so they think that you will be a push over, and then when you beat them, they look stupid.
  4. Staring - If your shore of the possition and are confident or what is going to happen next, just stare at them, it make them lose concentration.....

feel free to post your techniques.....

I should try them in my next game...

I clicked my piece and dragged it really fast, then mashed down on the submit move button... but it didn't seem to phase my opponent at all!

Man... I'm just lousy at this intimidation stuff.

The only guaranteed way to intimidate your opponent is to play good moves. :)
millerthesmurf

Quix
Act bored.

apparently rubbing their leg under the table, works but i wouldnt do that because you may get smacked

You can also set a piece down uncertainly to encourage your opponent to make an attack that you know is beneficial for your position/wins a piece/etc.

I like to counter any attempts at intimidation like those Fielding listed by acting completely non-plussed. Like I don't care and I'm actually confused about why the other person is grandstanding so much. I love that my opponent would be distracting themself with thoughts of how to try and intimidate me while I'm cooly focusing on the chess game. I would take a secret thrill when I start to win, and their "intimidating stare" suddenly finds itself cast upon the pile of pieces I've captured.

/counter-intimidation for the win

//just keep yourself completely composed

Well my physical apearance certainly helps me. I turn up in my long coat, with studded leather gloves, shades and eyeliner (all black); never met anyone that dresses like me at a chess tournament as of yet. :P Oh sensibly dressed players; tremble in terror at my image (...well kinda)!

At another tournament I did a flirty licking my lips thing when my opponent was looking; that was fairly distracting for him lol.

Oh another thing (suggested by my coach) is to just sit there for a few minutes at the start of the tournament when playing as white. Don't move and just stare your opponent in the eyes and when it says something along the lines of "It's your move," you say "yes, I know... I'm thinking". Then keep on staring. It is great fun and it won me a controllers prize once for "thinking about my moves." Teehee.

Haha intimidated by Goth getup.

I'd look up and be like, "Hey, uhh, if I take your Queen, you're not going to cut yourself, are you?"

Hehe, sorry Svenstikov... just teasing...

If it's intimidation you seek, I suggest investing in a good pair of ivory dentures.  There's nothing quite as unsettling to the opponent as when you pick up one of his pawns from the board, pop it into your mouth, gnaw it into itty bitty morsels, and spit it back out in his face.

Other ways to divert your opponent's attention:

If you're using your opponent's clock:  Pound the living heck out of it.

If you're using your opponent's chess set:  Set yourself up with a nice serving of buffalo wings (anything smothered in sauce will do), and NEVER wipe your hands. Also chew with your mouth open.

If you've captured a few of your opponent's pieces:  Quietly play with them like action figures, and enact a little drama wherein they are all blaming each other for what happened on the board.

;-)

Set "Who Let The Dogs Out" as your ringtone and conspire with someone beforehand to call your cellphone repeatedly.  Refuse to turn it off, giving the excuse that you are awaiting a very important call regarding your dear sick mother in the hospital.

I thought the thread was Chess Intimidation, not Chess Annoying.

Heh.

My club is pretty relaxed; nvr any "smacking". :P

Controllers medals are given at tournaments by the "controller" to someone it thinks has played well, but has not won one of the proper prizes (like 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in the tourny).
