Took me 4 minutes on my first try.
Chess IQ Test (quick)

How do you make the pieces move. I get a symbol that indicates they are in fixed positions.
I suppose you could move your mouse cursor around the board. No way I could do this on an interactive board here so maybe set up a real board at home, as was the way the test was originaly run.

I gave up even setting up the position using the tools here. Can't get the kings off the board. Then there's the issue of just one side moving.
I'd like to be able to do all that on an interactive board plus time it plus impose time infractions plus stop when complete. That would be pretty neat actually.

If you did it in a few seconds, you didn't do the test correctly.
4 minutes is pretty darned good, and less than that can be spectacular.
From Chess Life & Review 12/71
This is a timed test. The object is to maneuver the knight to b1, c1, d1, e1, f1, g1, h1, and so on, then to h2 then work to f2 (not g2 as it is controlled by a black pawn), and so forth, working rank by rank until the knight reaches a8. If the knight lands on a square occupied by a pawn or a square controlled by a pawn, add 10 seconds per infraction to your time. Having someone to record your infractions or a video capture running will be helpful as the person taking the test can easily miss having made a mistake.
The first move is obvious. Na1-c2-a3-b1.
The best times noted in the article are a school-boy Hort (future Candidate) and Penrose of England: 2 minutes. Jansa, Kavalek, and Smejkal clocked in at 3-1/2 minutes.
The authors speculate that an improved score on a second run indicates learning ability. Keene went from 4 minutes to 2-1/2, which was the best noted.
Is this really a chess IQ test? Probably not one set in concrete but have fun.
