I am reminded of the quote: "whoever says it's not winning or losing that matters probably lost". But in all honesty, I agree. I like chess for the game itself and not necessarily my rating. But wins and losses give a good sense of improvement, so I do like the competitive aspect.

Joking aside though, yeah there is a lot more than simply winning or losing. We aren't GMs playing for prestige and fame and really fighting for a win; we can enjoy friendships and other aspects that the game that chess offers
