Chess is too hard to learn!

I've been playing chess since the age of 8. Throughout my years playing, I have heard, and still do hear the line, "Chess is too hard to learn" from a great number of outsiders to the game. I couldn't help but wonder what drove this same response time and time again...

My conclusion: Chess is being compared with that of checkers!

Have you heard this line, or something relatively close to it? If so, what is your conclusion?

Of course, all of us hear that argument from time to time, and i guess is (mainly) for the reason you mention...

What is curious is that, when i play checkers with those people, i win almost the times, although i lose fair and square to those people who really know how to play checkers (some 10 % of the total).

My conclusion is that people who say that phrase don´t know what chess is and don´t know either what checkers is...

Chess is not checkers. Checkers is incredibly inferior, not to mention solved. Still I feel like I'm pretty good at checkers. My guess is that the sense of strategy you develop playing chess carries over. My theory is that chess can be hard to learn if your trying to teach yourself, but if you have someone helping you, after about 2 or so games you have all the rules down, and maybe even some rudimentary strategy.

I think too... People have this mental image of a chess game taking very long to play... of people studying a move for hours at a time. They don't want to think that long. They don't want to invest a couple hours into a game. If they only gave it some time to learn the game a little, they'd realize that most games are done in 10 minutes (or less). I think too... it IS a hard game to learn. Not so much the basic rules, but the strategy of it all. I've been playing for years and still know very little. Unless you have a talent or mind for chess, it is very difficult.

read the issue 7654 of Batman vs the Joker, you'll see it there.

I learnt chess myself at the age of 9. I wouldn't necessarily say that it is too difficult to learn, but that it is difficult to improve. Interestingly, I had a friend who often asked me how it is actually possibly to win a game of chess, because apparently, to him, 'it never ends'. So I figure that many people do not have the patience to either learn chess, or play it, and therefore conclude that it is too difficult.

Any tips fellas on playing black?

boalota

Black is beautiful. You must accept that white is ahead of a tempo. black's objective is to develop its pieces while defending its castle.

I feel like they know how to play just think "learning" is being good at chess. I learned how to play when I was like 9 but didn't take it seriously till a year ago. I'd say its hard to improve or get better not really learn the game.

lfPatriotGames

Either way, it's easier than it was 9 1/2 years ago.

Rather than being too hard to learn, I think it's too hard to teach. People hate losing and unfortunately, losing is the only way to get better at this game.

Chess is easy to learn, but hard to master.
