Chess King Software Worth It For My Son?

My 14 year old son is about 1400 USCF strength. He has a diamond membership here and Chessmaster on his computer.

Would the Chess King software be beneficial to him? What would it offer him that he doesn't already have on Chess.com and Chessmaster?

Thanks, all.

Kids love to see progress.  Chess King has about 2,000 problems on 25 levels.  The first 10 or 12 he'll probably whiz through, but then they start getting harder.  Supposedly based on Russian training.  Lots of overlap with Convekta products, but a cleaner interface.  Pretty interesting mix of puzzles, tactical motifs, and mates.  Unique is the game mode where you get to play Houdini at full strength.  Won't you get killed, you ask?  Oh did I forget to mention Houdini is missing pieces?  Teaches beginners elementary mating with overwhelming superior material and intermediates how to nail down a difficult opponent after getting an advantage.  They say the most difficult thing in chess is to win a won game so you get plenty of practice.  Yep, when I get tired of serious study over here and just want something more relaxed, it's a favorite program.

Some hate the somewhat limited graphics, but I find them fine.  Others want to be able to upgrade engines to something besides Houdini, but not possible.  The database is better than nothing but doesn't offer the functionality of HIARCS or the far more expensive Chessbase.  I use it daily.

I bought one of the chess king programs, it wasn't worth it. Navigating is too strange. Chess Mentor here is far better, and so is Chess ART 4.0. I would say that the chess king format is my least favorite of programs I have used for traing.

I have most of the auxiliary Chess King software as well as the main program and you're right: some of those are pretty lame.  The tactics are fine, and I use the opening series but reluctantly and with much cursing.  Luckily the main ChessKing program has almost nothing in common with its' siblings.  It's true though that there do seem to be some "unimplemented features". Laughing On the other hand, why exactly is it that a grown man is worried about how to spend his virtual gold coins? Embarassed Wink

All I know is I find it quite relaxing to play against a full strength engine but at impossible odds and just crush the engine with wild sacrificial attacks. Okay, not too wild or Houdini bites back.  And I hope doing the exercises over and over again is hoping my pattern recognition.  Mostly for fun, more productive than Solitaire.

Chess KIng is good, even if limited. Usualy I recommend Scid vs PC, features are endless, a world to discover, and it is free.

I bought chess King 4, dont buy it! ... It's hard to navigate, and to get to the puzzles, first you have to do the puzzles where you learn how to move the pieces, and you have to go through about 15 stages of puzzles for beginners before you get through some real puzzles... buy another software!

I bought Chess King for the 6-million game database

Chess King software would be perfect for your son!  I have  used chess software for 2 decades and Chess King offers the best VALUE and there are 24 YouTube videos to assist you with navigation .  You can get 2018 Chess King Diamond version with Houdini 6 for $79.95 FOR THREE LICENSES!  I currently use Fritz/Chess Base, Aquarium/Chess Assistant with Houdini and many of the Peshka programs and would recommend CT-ART 6 for the money.  All programs offer different features.  Wait for specials, also.  I don't think I paid full price for most of my chess programs

He's 20. About to be a junior at Baylor University. Studying entrepreneurship. He's 1800 and an active blogger on chess.com. He's also an in-demand chess coach for beginners. His handle is @DanielGuel
