Chess makes you depressed?

I'm wondering if anyone else has gotten depressed after losing a lot in Chess.  I've lost 200 points in weeks.  I think I need to quit playing this game because it's making me hate myself.  I'm worried I'm brain damaged or something.

chess doesn't make me depressed. its just a board game. but when envious idiots framed and defamed me, it affects my reputation. its much worse and more painful to be slandered for winning games in impressive ways than losing many games pathetically.

Well, you're a good player.  You should be proud.

its not even that impressive. winning against low rated players who make mistakes is nothing special even for amateurs. the real problem is the accuracy. chess.com has a super terrible way to measure how a human plays compared to computer

Chess actually helps keep me from being anxious or depressed. Checkers makes me depressed…zzzz

You just need to take a break and reinvigorate yourself slowly to the game. I had a slump more than once, and it often just takes some time and a fresh pair of eyes. It sucks, yes. But nothing worth it ever came easy. Going on youtube and watching some Chess vids or Chess streamers also helps.

Losses  can be used as learning experiences, but winning does make you feel better.

Losing tons of points doesn't really faze me as whenever I go through those extreme losing streaks I can usually pinpoint what the reasons are for my losses, and work on fixing them. I struggle to understand the reasons behind my rating stagnating more (I.e now)

Back to the below 1500 camp in rapid; tilting time is undefeated! (wink.png)

Checkers makes me depressed too, because little kids can beat me regularly.

I’m a little depressed. I need to get bullet rating back to 1500 at least to be totally happy again.

Online chess, in any format, is for fun, it's not reality. Those who are addicted to online chess and on a losing streak are basically suffering from dopamine exhaustion. Play unrated for a few days/weeks and regain your confidence.

Please also take into consideration there is a difference between clinical depression and unhappiness.

If I may, mention nothing happening under sun is unusual with chess. Losing streaks do happen as well winning streaks. I am sure others can chime in on their experience.

Personally, I have other hobbies such as guitars and golf going on that chess is a third hobby and deservingly so. Guitars pick up chicks and golf stimulates friendships and businesses.

You've just got to get comfortable with losing. That means accepting that without losing you wouldn't be able to improve. This should get easier the older and maturer you get, however I've seen plenty of adults who still cannot tolerate losing. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable and you take away a lot of self-deprecating stress.

My camp is running wild brother... what you gonna do when you lose? Go back in the camp and booze it away... 50 point tilt!

Live to dish it out another evening

I travel across Canada and meet customers. If you cannot golf during a 4 hour meeting, your integrity is down the drain.

When I visit friends and customers in majors cities, we golf and shoot the breeze. Tough gig.

I often wonder why I am not 1600 yet because a couple of my friends are lol.

On a slight shade of grey, I play the English and Sicilian vs the cookie cutter approach of 1.e4, e5 and 1. d4, d5 but I’ll let them continue to grind it out lol

It used to affect me a lot, but one day I after reaching a certain low hurdle goal I decided that I don’t care.
Of course this made me play worse, but at least I don’t care
