Chess notation/ books

I have been reading chess books and find it really hard to follow all the notations!! I have to look at the board and back to book every single move because I have 'spot' the correct square. I'm finding all these really difficult. Does anyone feel the same way? or maybe I'm just not smart enough to memorize the squares...

Do you have trouble with reading in general or only with chess books? If you're smart enough to use a PC and post your question here I'd guess you are smart enough to memorize the squares even if you're having trouble doing so right now

Are you trying to visualize the moves in your head or are you playing through over the board and you can't remember the square name from the book to the board?

If you're trying to visualize the moves, that can be very difficult for more than a few ply and most people struggle with it to some degree or another. Even GMs use analysis boards when reading books at times.

If the problem is you simply can't remember the square from the time you read it until you get to the board, then there may be other things at play here. I wouldn't want to speculate what those things may be wtihout more information.

It would be very hard for you to familiarize the board in the beginning. But the more you read chess notation, the deeper you can visualize the pieces moves (even all the variations!) :D

I am sure that as you read more of these books, your mind will be trained to counter the situation. Usually people use actual chess sets and make the moves from the book on the board, to be able to understand what's going on better.

Hope this helps!
