Online 2D is considered passive learning.
OTB 3D is considered active learning.
Yes, there is a difference. Active learning is better, and you absorb more.

I tried playing on a 4-space hyperbolic screen projection of a 5-dimensional physical set, and all it did for me was enable me to taste colors.
I find that if I spend much more time OTB or on screen, I don't play as well on the other. For example, right now I'm mostly on screen and I know from past experience I have to watch the diagonals very closely if I play OTB because I'll be prone to miss something.
I have found I play much better OTB. When I am playing on screen 'it doesn't really count' as there is not a living breathing opponent right there across from me. A real person I can see and touch (not that I would the latter) gives me more of a sense of accountability as my every move is being scrutinized.
Howdy chess lovers,
Has anyone found that playing on a chess board vs online is different to you?
I recently played on a chess board and found that I play better or see better tactics. I am curious to know if other players experience the same thing?
Love to hear your answers.
I like playing OTB. My head aches just by analyzing even a few minutes on the screen. probably caused by my astigmatism, eyes are sensitive to light, and that already affects my gameplay online.
Hello,
I'm late to this thread, but I didn't want to start a new one because there is relevant material already posted here.
I find that I play about 180 points lower when I come to play on board again after being so long on-screen.
Do you know, is there an on-screen provider that provides a 3D tangent of view instead of 2D to ameliorate this effect?
If not, we will all be getting schooled all over again by lower ranked players when we go back to boards, if and when Covid lets up.
Thanks!
