William Steinitz
Steinitz had a big influence on the chess world; he introduced the positional concepts of weak pawns, weak squares, the bishop pair and other concepts. Before Steinitz, everyone had an aggressive playstyle that ended games in a mate. He gave chess vision and changed what we understand about chess.
These are all fair points...
IF you like boring undecisive games.

No, ur trick doesn't work because levy isn't a player, he's a streamer. He's not a professional chess player
My trick doesn't work because it's simply a matter of opinion and you can't prove or disprove opinion.

Gothamchess recommends the Caro-Kann and Vienna. He nods his head toward playing for a draw, but when faced with an aggressive and winning opening like the Sicilian, "oH nO sTOp PLaYiNG iT".
It's nice to meet a fellow Gotham fan Especially one that studies him to such depth!
I will never understand why people make troll threads like this one. At least, if you are trolling, be classy. Don't do a full 360 in just the 7th comment of the thread. This is pathetic.

Ah, I see. Not a Gotham fan per se, but Gotham Troll fan. Interesting!
Well, spoiler alert, no experimentation here. Just good ol' fashioned boredom trolling.
Title says it all.
He has inspired and taught millions to play.
You may not like him, but you can't argue with facts.
Prove me wrong.
Even if we were to assume very incorrectly that every single Gotham sub began playing chess permanently when they subscribed to his channel (so no Gotham subs with prior chess experience, no Gotham subs who don’t play chess, and no Gotham subs who stopped playing chess for any reason afterwards), he merely flooded the player base with an influx of U1300s with no real knowledge of the game. In reality though, many Gotham subs watch him but don’t play chess and many more began watching him after playing chess. He’s an entertainment channel, not an educational channel, so his contribution to professional chess is negligible and his contribution to amateur chess might actually be worse than negligible as he teaches inaccurate moves and warns against accurate moves, thereby stunting his fans’ growth in the long run, and opponents of his fans often grow frustrated with the sheer quantity of players who play these unambitious and annoying openings. He is also compensated handsomely for any contribution (real or perceived) through fame and fortune due to his successful content creation career. We owe him nothing, perhaps less than nothing.

Hmm. Touché.
However, Beth Harmon is the fictional player from that show. She inspired a whole generation of viewers to take up chess.
Therefore, Beth Harmon has done more for chess than Levy Rozman has.

You could even go with Judit Polgar, as she was the inspiration for that character, and her games are studied by many professionals even still to improve, so Judit Polgar has done more for chess than Levy Rodman has.

I definitely agree that Judit has been far more influential than Levy. I think Levy would agree, too.

I mean, honestly, you're probably right.
But for the sake of this thread I must disagree.

Go ask 100 people and I bet more people know Levy than Judit. Has Judit ever made a Guess the ELO video with millions of views? Levy has made dozens. If Judit has done so much more, why did the chess boom happen shortly after levy came on the scene when Judit has been around for ages? I rest my case.

Bobby Fischer probably had the biggest impact of all. Before him chess was strictly for weirdos and Russians. It still mostly is, but Fischer made it popular in America...and if you want things to matter, they have to be popular in America. Sorry, that's just the way it is, right or wrong. Until a new country takes over the mantle of Rome, no-one cares if something is hot stuff in Sweden or Japan.
After Fischer everyone in American and Europe (and probably India and China too, down the line), wanted to play chess, and it was no longer just a Russian playground with a few European poindexters occasionally scoring some points in a tournament. It took a generation to lay the groundwork but now the Russians are no longer holding the championship and they may never hold it again, or at least not for a very long time.
Gothamchess is a tremendous popularizer, and he has hugely benefited from Queen's Gambit and Covid, but his legacy remains to be seen. As a teacher he's adequate for beginners or coffeehouse players looking for quick tips. In a few more years he may well be done, retired, living on a beach, and that will be that for Gothamchess.
