Don't fight it, don't hide from it, don't be ashamed by it.... embrace your inner nerd.

Face facts: you wear glasses, post hentai avatars and play chess (I bet you even play video games).

The mark is upon you,

you are a nerd!

What's wrong with being a nerd?

There's nothing wrong with being a nerd. I like chess, computer programming, physics, math, video games, memory techniques, Rubik's cubes, alien conspiracy theories, and the list goes on. I'm an all around nerd. If you're really into chess you are probably a nerd too, congratulations!

Anime not hentai!

I don't play video games anymore (busy studying), but I used to.

Only a real nerd would know the difference.

I like your name, but wouldn't "Krapsarov" be a slight improvement (transposing "r" and the and the "a". Orginally when I registered I spelt Zugzwang incorrectly, but then changed it...)

Apparently a "nerd" is a "geek" without social skills.

Chess players tend to be slightly introverted, but to be honest I find the majority of chessplayers interesting with their own story to tell after you break through the initial barrier - so tend to be geeks rather than nerds.

The worse bores are non chessplaying fashion followers who go out looking "cool" etc and are little more than cardboard cutouts when you go beyond their persona .

LOL  I agree with you.....AND there is nothing wrong with having a "nerd" look....I really dont understand what looks has to do with playing this wonderful mind game

Dude, I totally am a nerd.

Lou-for-you

In real life, chess players are 50% people at the edge of society. Not the movers and shakers of this world. The other 50 % is a mixture of quite successful, humorous, smart, handsome, dumb, egotistical,etc.. So for everybody there is place. For the extraverted, for the introverted. They just play to have a bit of fun. But half of them make little out of life and hide in a game.

Ridiculous stereotypes ¡¡  We all have us something of nerds, and What ?

Remember that on some/a lot of movies chess clubs and so are portrayed by glasses (I wear glasses) people who look like the typical nerd (I'm a nerd)?

Well that's ridiculous. I've seen the absolute top and aside of Anand and Kramnik, I've yet to encounter a nerd type of player.

+1

You mean refuting alien conspiracy theories... right?  Physics, logistics, and probabilities all point to them never coming here or ever being here.  Considering the odds of intelligent life evolving it'd be a safe bet to assume we're alone in the Milky Way or at least our section of it.

Well..I'm a lady and very bad at chess, but I enjoy it and wish more women would learn. I am surprised this game does not appeal to more women. :)

Haven't you heard of the nerd rule?

N=G(S^2)

Nerd = Glasses * Smart * Smart

or...

if (glasses === true){

nerd = maybe;

}

else {

nerd = false;

}

if (nerd === maybe && smart > 95){

nerd === true;

};

oh, one way to get smart to 95 is good grades, robotics, and yes, chess

I don't think Chess players are "nerds."  The problem is actually more pernicious and degrading:

There is systemic negative re-inforcement maintained at keeping Chess' players self-esteem low and their aspirations oppressed.  This is very similar to how Blacks were treated in the United States for many decades, or the systemic exclusion and shunning of Jews in many European countries.

Cultural progaganda constantly propagates negative stereotypes of chess players to the detriment of the chess minority.  More subtly, money and support is kept away from organized chess in order to re-inforce the manta that chess is "low class" or worthless.

What can chess players do, however, when the vast majority of the powers that be are actively keeping the chess minority poor and oppressed -- effectively denying us any social status whatsoever?

That's not cool comparing Civil Rights struggles to chess.

Though yeah it could be considered "low class" for the same reason as STEM majors, it's scientific and technical whereas stuff considered "high class" (e.g., useless fluff degrees like philosophy and arbitrary social rules only uppers would know) is arbitrary (such as certain tastes).
