Chess rating decreased by 300. Unable to get it back up

Hi guys,

I am currently stuck on 1000 and losing perpetually to players with 950-1000 ratings. I have taken a break from chess for about 3 months, though I played a few times in between. I've been back at chess vigorously for the past week but I am unable to increase my score, being stuck in the 1000 range. My personal highest was at 1300, this was about 7 months ago but idk u could see my stats. I used to be able to beat 1100 rated players easily. But now I am struggling to play against 900-1000 rated players. I reached 900 in about 2 months of playing. I'm back at 1000 now, unable to increase my score. I am not sure what is causing this because I used to never lose against anyone below 1000 even while I am in the 1200 range. I am not sure what is happening. It could be my MDD or the neurotoxin I breathed during summer academy. The school didn't get a shit about it so I thought it wasn't a big deal

Several reasons could be the cause:

1. It is normal for a person to lose chess skill after a break. If you stop playing it get's removed out of your short term memory.  You need to rebuild your short term memory again if you take a long break, like 3 months. After you rebuild your short term memory with chess, things will start to go upwards again.

2. Another reason could be rating inflation, a year ago more people were into chess because of the netflix serie Queen's Gambit, that meant that allot of new players were starting, but now did go away. More new players mean the average player was worse back than, than is now.

3. Another thing that happens is, the collective chess mind of all players is slowly going up. A chess player with rating 1200 now is much better than a chess player with rating 1200 20 years ago.

Grind tactics, and try to calculate the forcing line to it’s conclusion prior to moving any pieces, physical or otherwise.

This is how many strong players recommend doing tactics puzzles, as opposed to looking for the first move or two, playing those out and then looking for the continuation.

Calculation is important.

Dude said he's depressed plus suffered neurotoxin poisoning, and people are like "do tactics bro."

lol

In fairness, no one on a Chess forum is going to help him with that, he should seek professional help for those problems.

Obviously those are the priority, but if he wants to improve at Chess, he needs to do tactics bro.

Wow, that’s exactly what my doctor told me about heart disease. “You need to do more tactics, bro.”thumbup.png

What were the neurotoxins that effected you?

Always check your intended move is no blunder before you play it.
This little mental discipline is enough to get you to 1500.

Good job

It is probably over 80% due to rating inflation. I and several other players on this app have lost hundreds of ratings points due to this phenomenon

Focus on solid, principled play rather than trying to outplay your opponent tactically at every move.
